I had the shakes for awhile there.

I must say the blond who kept popping up was attractive though.

I had this problem with a jetta 10 or so years ago. The pick-up screen would get caked with rubber residue from an inferior hose I must have used on the fuel system somewhere.

I searched. (maybe not quite well enough)
What seems to be the best way for a break in as to not glaze the cylinders after a re-ring/rebuild?

It's worked for me in the past as well. I wouldn't say it's stupid at all. (provided the lug bolts are somewhat close to snug)

Check the glow plug fuse on the firewall behind the master cylinder. My money is on this.
