Re: Gear Oil Options
Don't forget Hagar's method of running the left side of the car on a ramp (or jacking it up) and filling the tranny from the big plug.

Re: Towing Long-distances with towbars + VW resources in Phi
I can't confirm it for your tranny, but damage to other manual transmissions from towing is common; that's why I suggested that you overfill it. But you might be just fine unhitching the car and driving it a short distance to circulate the tranny oil. Either way, I hope you have a safe trip, and no ...

You can protect the tranny by overfilling it a little; it's SOP on many towed "lifeboat" vehicles that are towed behind an RV.

Re: replacement struts and springs.
The HD's are much firmer than the Sachs struts I had previously. I'd recommend KYB's or the Touring struts if you're looking for a smoother ride. The HD's handle great, at the cost of a plush ride.

Re: replacement struts and springs.
I'm running Bilstein HD's front and rear, and replacement springs and spring seats from an '85 on the front. It lifted the front about 2 inches. The rear is next; it'll get the same treatment (springs, that is).

Yeah, it's repaired but I was hoping to do it up factory; probably unneeded.
What year(s) did the newer alternator come on, do you know?

Alternator wiring repair plug?
I just finished the temporary repair of the blue (exciter) wire on my 83, and I suppose it will actually work for many years. I'd like to repair it permanently though, and would buy a new plug to do so. Anyone have a source for a new one? I have a couple used ones, but I'd sooner replace it with new...

Always kind, always helpful, Hagar had the qualities we all wish to share with our world. Thanks Svend for all the knowledge and for your gentle way of sharing it. This board, and the world is better because of you.

One more question- how does this thing oil itself?
I drove it a short distance and the brakes work great, not like a truck
