Re: nichrome wire gauge for block warmer

Another great way to heat the engine is with an oil pan heater pad, available from Kat's. I have one, and it works great. The oil is warm when i start the car, and that's (to me) more important than warm coolant.
Maybe even both...... :D

Not to hijack, but does anyone know wher to get the Mahle filter for my 1983? I'd been buying them locally, but the guy I used to get them from stopped selling.

I'm pretty confident that the crankshaft pulley jumped time; When I turned the engine over, I could feel definate spots where something was hitting, and it wasn't due to compression. When I checked the timing, the crank was off what I believe was a full tooth-with everything lined up (cam and pump),...

Yeah, 90 is too loose. After tightening it, rev to about 200-2500 RPM and see if the belt is vibrating too much between the crank and idler. When a belt jumps, it's usually the injection pump. The idler holds the belt pretty tight to the cam and it has more teeth in contact with the belt than the i...

A close call.

Driving home on Tuesday, I revved the car a little at a stoplight, and immediately noticed a marked decrease in power. Drove it the half mile home and parked it. Yesterday I drug out the tools and put a wrench on the cam gear. Turned it over and I could feel a resistance in several places in the rot...

Brilliant. A friend uses a Bowman fastener cabinet that has something like 36 compartments in it, and I think your method is more useful.

Another option is a Kats stick on oilpan heater. I realize that the pan on your car isn't steel like mine, but you might check into it. Failing that, consider putting a 75w incandescent light in the engine compartment. It's a way of heating the engine that's been used for decades. Just make sure tha...

I've had the same problem. I wasted plenty of time doing different things, but it ended up being a bad "blue" wire. Fixed it, and it was fine.

The bolts - new 6mm bolts. No lock washers...or washers were supplied. I just reused the 2 bolt washers or plates (3 per transaxle). Should I be using lock washers? Not unless you're building a fence. Lock washers won't allow a G5 or G5 bolt to be fully tightened, and will damage both the bolt and ...

"Burlier" front springs for a MK1 can be had by swapping MK2 front springs and spring seats in. It gives a 2 inch lift.

If you spray paint the junction of the housing and the hub and let it dry before you remove it, you will be able to see right where it was and not have to do a front end alignment. Maybe. If the bearing is good and the old parts aren't bent, you might get away with it. I'd still check the Toe in (f...

WTT Recaros for Nice MK1 or MK2 seats

Like the Irish proverb says, careful what you wish for, you just might get it... I bought a nice set of blue Recaros out of a MK2 last winter, and they're great. Trouble is, my arse is too big to fit them, or they're supposed to fit tight. Either way, I'd like more comfort. I'll trade these seats (p...
