Racor

Is this an aftermarket add-on or stock? It's an add on. Should I keep it, and why or why not? If you don't have issues with the clear line having bubbles, you can keep it. If the filters are easy to get, and the housing is ok, I'd be tempted to keep it. But the moment it gave trouble, I'd eliminate...

Take off the trim, unscrew the speedo, take out the cluster screws, and it'll come right out. Be careful not to break off the post that you reset the mileage thingie with.
Replace all the bulbs so you don't have to do it again.
Good luck.

I don't believe Time Serts are any longer, but I've had much better success using them. They seem to be tougher, and I used them extensively in a engine rebuilding business I worked in. Still, a new block might be better if you can find one.

repair

If you go the repair route, look into TimeSert brand thread repairs. I'd also suggest ARP head studs and nuts rather than the gennie headbolts in order to put as little stress on the threads as possible.
The VERY BEST suggestion is to replace the block.

Seats for 83

I'd like to buy a set of seats for my 83. I'd prefer blue or black, and I'd REALLY like a set from a GTI, maybe a set of Recaros. I'm interested in fronts mostly, but matching rears would be wonderful. Prefer to buy in the Rocky mountain area, but if the price and condition were great, I might go fo...

The printing on the back of the belt is still partially visible which leads me to believe that it may be fairly new.
X3. I doubt you'll have any trouble.

front brace

I doubt you need them unless you're doing a lot of fast cornering, for example, while rallying or some other kind of racing. If you have the extra money, they don't hurt, though. Start with the lower brace, then add the upper, since the lower frame horns are a bit more in need of support than the st...

They're the same. I just checked them on the new water pump assy and t-stat I got from Jack a year ago.

silicone

I used blue silicone because it's what I had on hand, not because it's better. I'm using copper plus now on most everything I need silicone for (which isn't that much really). I'm not sure about 27 B, but most silicone is just fine for holding the heater on. And you may not need it at all, if it has...

Pan heater

I usually plug mine in a couple hours before I leave for work. When I went to work at 5 AM, though, I had it plugged into a heavy duty timer and just ran it two hours. I also reglued it after the first season, as the adhesive failed. I used blue silicone sealant, and duct taped it to the pan. Worked...

I'd use grade 8 personally, and use lots of antisieze. I wouldn't use a dissimilar metal like stainless.

One more thing

One more thing about DIY alignment- I wanted a set of turn plates for the sake of accuracy, but I'm loathe to buy them for fifty, sixty bucks each. The solution was to use eight 12X12 vinyl floor tiles (two per wheel) with grease between them, under each wheel. They're really effective and cheap. No...

'10 Golf diesel?

Got a call from my local dealer late yesterday. He's getting a 2010 Golf diesel 2dr, just one, and he'll sell it to me if I make a committment today. He tells me that each U.S. dealer gets just one. I'm pretty tempted, but I want a 4 dr. car, not a 2 dr. The car comes in 2 dr. only. He did the sales...
