Re: Altitude clatter from N/A

I searched around and found that yes, higher cetane (in general) is needed for colder climates or high altitudes. Diesel here says 45 on the pumps. Diesel #1 used in really cold areas is 50+ cetane. I think reducing my dynamic advance will be worth doing. This is a real downside to not having a turb...

Altitude clatter from N/A

I'm told there is no remedy for injector clatter at high altitudes. Nevertheless, I keep wondering on it. Driving across the sierra Madre is a long time to listen to that rattle at high revs. Was thinking maybe it's worth adding a shim to the IP advance spring to reduce the dynamic advance. I do thi...

Re: Oil leak at front of camshaft

Sure enough when I got the #1 cam cap off there was no sealant. Was so glad to to see that. That leak is finally fixed ! Thanks for the verification. Whoever built the head just didn't know. I guess it is an unusal thing that a cam cap is on the outside of the head like that? Seems like this would b...

Re: RA deals

Using the Nugeon part number, others can be found on the web. But looking for the bracket itself, nada. I had been needing new brackets for years. Anti-rattle clips fell out so much I had to silicone the ends. They're not new brackets, but way better than mine. My core bracket was rejected.

Re: RA deals

These mk1 KelseyHayes front calipers are pretty cool, and a great price. Whats really cool is some come WITH the carrier brackets. I got a pair a while back and then they were out of the ones with brackets, looks like they got a couple back in. The caliper is easy to get, but those brackets are supe...

Re: Oil leak at front of camshaft

Thanks for the help on this. It's an oddly missed discussion of the IDI pages. Sounds like Permatex form-a-gasket #2. I can see how people miss this area leaking because it is blocked visually by the sprocket, but shows down on corner of the head. It wasn't till I cleaned behind the sprocket with a ...

The good stuff

Walmart has the 5w40 T6 for ~$24.
Napa has a valvoline-made synthetic 5w40 under their fleet brand for $21

Not bad considering the delvac 15w40 is now at least 15 buck or more.

Oil leak at front of camshaft

This CY engine isn't very old but I don't know who built it. Oil has been leaking out of the top since I first started it. I thought it was the valve cover, then the head gasket, but finally last night I had cleaned it up and did a short trip, and was lucky to see it through the cam sprocket with a ...

Re: RA deals

It's like $5 for the pack, pretty sure it's nitrile. Same as all the other cheap black orings. Autozone used to sell them for 10, now they sell smaller packs of 16 for $5 :x I think the dorman 172 pack can still be found, but not at a better price. I use this one a lot, almost bought another but it ...

Dorman 675354 m10x1.50 stud $.63 (closeout) looks suitable for the timing belt tensioner stud. Those things sometimes get damaged and finding one is kind of a hassle. Nice to have a spare I took one off a 1.6d head to measure and the dorman one is just slightly longer on the long end. Short end and ...

Re: Looking into biodiesel - '91 Jetta

Glover Oil here hasn't had any kind of BioDiesel for a long time.
Whatever company was making it, has stopped.
Sucks, after running Bio off and on for over a year my merc diesel IP had nothing
but clear fuel when I did the Diesel Purge. Super Clean

Just a reminder of where the value of a good running and looking mk1 is continuing to go.
