So it sounds like it's similar to petro-diesel. Does one just add some "Sta-bil" or similar product, or even a diesel biocide if it's to be stored for more than a few months? Would that allow me to store a couple hundred gallons in reserve for bio-diesel powered generator, tractor, etc? J.R.

Personal favorite in multiple battery bank handling is SurePower. Note their guide to charging systems & batteries at http://www.surepower.com/pdf/ebr_int.pdf They seem to build in more reliability than the others for RVers of all sizes.

Does no one on this forum have an answer, or even a S.W.A.G. for this question?

TIA

Quoting Fatmobile: " I had a copper tubing heat exchanger... I don't think it's the best option. " OK. Then what is "the best option"? I was planning to load a copper heating coil into my aluminum tank and connect with through-fittings to HWH. I'm sure open to suggestions from th...

should be pretty easy to have the keyway issues solved by a competent machine shop if the engine's out for a 'build anyway.

What about using a sacrificial zinc anode in the cooling system? They're usually just hung in the radiator, but it seems like the could fit in the plastic expansion jug & do the same job.

Sounds good! Same timer system would give some 'cool-down' time to the turbo, possibly delaying/preventing coked bearing surfaces.

Prob will fit, even if you use one 68 gasket & one 82 gasket to seal things up.
Input shaft length prob very close. 68 is about 9/16" inch shorter than 77-on; don't know if it's same as diesel's. Kennedy makes complete flywheel adaptor setups for these.

Best wishes.

Yeah. Keep us posted. Petec... I bought that same pump(well... same price, color & design, anyway) through Harbor freight , to do cooling system flushes without having to run engines in the shop. It kinda works, but is not real impressive; wouldn't even take a prime to drain a washing machine ta...

Could be all manner of junk in the tank and/or lines by now, but may just be a plugged 'sock'-type prefilter on the pickup tube inside the tank. Can you blow (only 5-6 psi, please)through to the tank with the input line off the main fuel filter? Remove the fuel cap first & have someone listen fo...

Couldn't find either plate on ETKA disc. Bummer. How different could they be, since engine rear face is the same (in spite of way different trannies)??? Give it a try. I've frequently heard(and for different car manufacturers, also) that those plates are not available from the parts dept.! Just what...

Forgot to log-in again. In checking VW So. Africa's website, it looks like they're still producing the Vanagon(they call it 'Caravelle T-3')at one location. But I'll bet they're bunches of used parts around, like 5-speed transaxles in just the ratois you'd want, or maybe even just the bellhousing fo...

You might want to check this site for engine conversion info: http://www.volkswagen.org/ Seems like your idea is very do-able. There were Audi 5cyl TD engines here for quite a few years. Adding an intercooler to one of those could make it an even sweeter powerplant for your Vanagon. Keep us posted, ...

Certainly it can be done just as easily as an Audi 5-cyl gasser; even easier since your Vanagon is already a factory VW diesel unit. just a few points that come to mind: 1) Make sure you have the exhaust manifold milled flat at the flanges where it bolts to the head. Audi 5 cyl manifolds are notorio...

How about a few Vanagon safety-positive attributes that have not been mentioned in this thread: rack & pinion steering for more accurate control, large & well-placed turn signals up front to let others know your intentions, good headlights(by U.S. standards) & easy to replace with 7"...
