Before I yank the fuse panel,...

I've been wanting to pull my fuse panel away so I could inspect the wiring in the rear, but I've been unsure how to disconnect it from the mounts. I've got an '81 Wabbit. I looked in a wrecking yard this weekend, and it looks like there's one screw at the bottom, then the panel lifts up and out from...

Thanks, guys. My starter seems to be OK, but I always wonder if it should turn it over with a bit more gusto. I figured having a good backup would help in case winter proves my intuition is correct. I'd heard that the new, smaller diameter starters were supposed to be the better of the two, so I had...

I happen to have just replaced mine. It was the very top (upper most) relay on the right side of the fuse panel. It was the very highest one, and is much wider than any of the others. You can get a new one and then use it to compare, as there are waaaaay more pins on the glow plug relay than I've ev...

Yeah, I've got an 81 NA as well, and I've noticed it when my thermostat opens to allow water flow. Until then, everythings dead headed with a centrifugal pump, so there's very little load and nothings really moving. At the point the thermostat opens enough to get flow, the pump bogs the engine down....

So I finally got around to putting a candy thermometer in the tank, and it reads 188 deg f., which is about what everyone else is reporting as well. The fan did kick in while I was taking the temperature, but I couldn't detect a drop in temperature due to the fan. I'm guessing there's different temp...

IF THE BLOCK is cracked, Coke, or anybody with similar experience, can one see the crack? Or, does the block have to be magnafluxed to tell? How do you tell??????? Mine is an '81 as well, and I bought it with a crack (and with the oil in the coolant, etc...). I replaced the gasket (not knowing abou...

I went the a farm supply store and bought an electrical temp gauge for about $12, and installed it, and it works great. Just curious, where did you hook up the sensor to? This sounds like a reasonable approach. How does anyone know if the fan is running while you're going down the road? It's not li...

No, fourth tic can't be high... it's just about 1/3 the way up the scale. The first bold large tic (barely sensing heat, I'd guess) is the second tic overall. Two above that is still south of center... It almost never gets to the center of the scale. My instinct is that it's running pretty cool for ...

water temperature feedback

I just wanted to glean some knowledge from the more experienced of you. I have an '81 NA, and have no background with any other rabbit to tell if what I'm seeing is normal. Is the normal temperature operating range (as displayed) about the fourth tick up on the gage? Mine seems to normally reside ju...

I had a similar issue with mine as well. It turned out that I was missing just one latch (that holds the cover for the filter to the intake manifold) down on the lower left corner. When I replaced it and clipped the cover on more firmly, I was amazed to discover that almost all the noise from my int...

I know this isn't the answer you're hoping for, but on mine it turned out to be a hairline crack from a head bolt through a water passage and into an oil drain gallery on the surface of my block. From what I've read, this is not uncommon. I have no oil cooler. Some people say they've successfully re...

I probably should have asked this first... When's the last time you changed your fuel filter? When the filter begins to plug up, it can't pass enough fuel to get the extra power you need to overcome that kind of wind resistance. I just went through that today, as well. My little buggy just seemed to...

My 1.6 NA is a bit wimpy as well. I rebuilt it about 6k ago, and the largest impact I've had was to have the IP completely rebuilt. Whew! What a difference that made! That turned out to be $500 well spent! 8) I would suggest you play with the max fuel screw. I'd describe it better, but it's been awh...
