Problem completely solved. It is fuel related. This time, at Giles' suggestion, I added 3 oz of Stanadyne to my tank of fuel and the problem is gone. Looks like summer fuel equates to "Crap fuel".

Interesting happenings - I am getting desperate...it's getting worse. Last tank I added 6 oz. of Power Service (white bottle) instead of the recommended 3 oz. I also added 2 cups of ATF. Immediately, the surging is almost completely gone.

I tried Merc Nozzles and GTD nozzles on my AAZ and went back to a new set of stock AAZ nozzles.
On the AAZ, replace the 1.9 turbo with a Garrett T3 from a 1.6. I'm making great power now.

I have a completely rebuilt AAZ with a rebuilt/modified pump. Often, at slow speeds and light loads I get surging or Jerking which I can only fix be stepping down hard on the throttle. NEVER use anything but a Bosch or Mann (OEM) filter on a diesel. Cold oil pressures can run to 100 psi and will pod or blow lesser filters.

Any 020 will fit. I had a 1995 Passat tranny in and I now have a 1992 Jetta Turbodiesel trans in mine.

An AON will bolt right in with no problems. Unless you've got a lot of power, the .71 5th may be too much with a 3.67 final drive.

It was a great time. Over 140 took the 3-hour cruise and well over 200 VWs at the show. There were only 3 other Mk 1s, and all were gas (the Caddy in the first pic is a VR6) but the overall representation of the diesel folk was very high.
