Re: Newbie here, IP problem
Awesome! keep your head on , I always dread installing the head because the plunger is such a tight fit, afraid I might be scuffing it a little as I'm trying to line everything up.

Re: Newbie here, IP problem
Good luck with it. I bought the ebay video and it still took me several tries to get it right. One way to test it before you put it back on the engine and time it is to: first, put the pump in a vice and slowly test the pump movement by hand using the sprocket to make sure everything moves/rotates s...

Re: Newbie here, IP problem
The whole thing no. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=n94BvDvDJgM#t=835 so you might only have to take the roller assembly out to find the shim. other than that, there is a short pin from the governor assembly that goes into the control collar (spill ring) which can easil...

Re: Newbie here, IP problem
can one remove just the head? , probably not if the shim fell out; if it didn't then something else is wrong. I couldn't do it in 2 hours. When you take the internal parts out, set them in container with some clean diesel fuel (I use a square tupperware). You can cover it and/or move it (out of sigh...

Re: Newbie here, IP problem
That would be an amazing trick to place the shim in with pump on the car. The pump should to be vertical, that's why the shim fell out (if that is indeed the case). Taking the head off the pump on the car (or horizontal) would let the rollers fall out, you really don't want that to happen. You could...

Re: Newbie here, IP problem
If it still turns smoothly (by hand) it's probably fine. Its better to open it up and change all the o-rings anyway if the big one leaked (I assume you bought the whole kit). There can be a lot of unknown crud inside the pump, and you can modify your governor and timing advance while your at it.

Re: leaky injector
If I were going to take the injector apart, assuming it still sprays good, I'd just clean up the parts and polish the sealing surfaces (flat of the top half injector and the spacer), just enough to make the grooves dissappear, finishing off with 2000 grit. I'd try sanding first before buying a new n...

Re: leaky injector
If you really don't want to- http://vincewaldon.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=28 . I suppose it depends on how bad its leaking, but I've put superglue in/on where the injector halves meet to stop or slow down leaking there. Clean it with brake cleaner first. The...

Re: How mutch does your car smoke?
Did your injectors get rebuilt, too? Someone rebuilt the 1.6D engine in my 81' MK1 but not the injectors, when I took the injectors out and pop tested them the breaking pressures were way off spec. Nozzles were all pitted around the pintles but it still ran decent; Smoked a bit, milage average or le...

Re: Diagnosing Overheating
I had a 80' Dasher wagon. Sometimes I would use the cabin heater with the fan on high as an "auxiliary radiator" in an emergency. Ended up getting the old brass radiator cut open and cleaned out.

Re: Diagnosing Overheating
In a 1.6 diesel car that was not driven for a while I had a sticking thermostat overheat it (going up a big hill), check that if you haven't already. The easiest way is to just get a new thermostat.

Re: Air in fuel lines
If your IP has a hard time pulling fuel from the tank, the increased suction will pull air into the fuel line at any place it can (even tight hose clamps).
