DIY: Drive Axle Flange Seal Replacement

I recently replaced the drive axle flange seals on my '90 TD. Did the first one last week and the driver's side one (harder one) this week. Thought I would take some pics in case anyone else decides to embark on this task as well. :) The part number required for the seal kit: 020 498 085 G It comes ...

A new used one will cost approx. $600 CAN. Am ...

Drive axle flange and seal

My manual transmission is leaking oil at the flange/flange seal. But there is also some play in the axle. It is able to move up and down (opposed to in and out of the transmission).

Is a small amount of play normal? Would this hint that it may be the flange itself and not the flange seal?
