Re: oil temperature

210 to 260 F

Could be a little less cruisng than 210, but you want the water to steam off, so right around there is good.

Re: Anyone got an 11mm head they can measure?

Get a m12-1.75 bolt and try to thread it into the block. If it won't go it is 11. if it does it is 12

Re: 83 Automatic Transmission Shifting Help

I wouldn't. Most of the trans flush stuff has tons of cleaning additives...but that is about all ATF is as well. Just change it a few times. I had a buddy with a brand new ford that had his flushed when it was changed. Everything bushing that was brass was eaten away and he needed a new trans when t...

Re: does this fit a 1.9l?

The exhaust is the same on every 8v water cooled VW that I have seen. This is the Gasser, 1.5, 1.6, and 1.9 AAZ and TDI...TDI up to the ALH for sure, I do not have knowledge of the newer PD engines but don't see VW changing it for them. It will bolt to your head is what I am saying.

Re: New Problem in Pittsburgh

I think that timing by ear is an option...but only if you don't have the gauge. It would go guessing, timing by ear, timing with dial indicator, and timing with a timing light would be the order from worst to best. I highly recommend getting tools as .1mm is a big deal and usually that is hard to do...

Re: Dasher compression results what does it mean?

Doing the compression check on a cold engine will yeild bad results. I bet you will have acceptable #s if it was a hot engine.

Re: starter problem

I had this same problem, i ended up replacing the starter only to have it do the same thing shortly after. The next one IReplaced the starter bushing and installed the new starter no problems since. Yeah it was kind of tounge and cheek as I have made reference to this about 3 times. He'll catch on ...

Re: starter problem

The starter spins a little, then fizzles out, battery drains (I should have been more descriptive) I think I'm down to the starter motor or battery. I feel things are clearing up. Thanks for the help. I wonder if there is a bushing or something that would make the starter work harder if it was bad....

Re: Bosch VE pump; won't idle after rebuild

Alright thanks bud. No I don't have clear fuel lines but I know that there is no air in the system because I have ran it from a bottle of fuel and it still has the same symptoms. Not really expecting anyone to be able to diagnose it really, just wanted to see if it had happened to anyone else :? Ye...

Re: starter problem

Depending on how bad the bushing is I ruined my first starter in less than a week as I had no clue about the bushing that was in there. I think it was .022" worn when we measured it against a new one, and the starter would bind and fight itself. Got another new starter and it did the same thing...

Re: starter problem

If you never replaced the bushing in the trans that will ruin a new starter in short order. It will also make a new starter work harder than it needss to. You can make a self lube bushing when you buy the bushing with the starter, fill it full of your favorite lube oil and squeeze. It will come out...

Re: 1.6 vs 1.9 IDI heads

I would ask your machinist what the bores measure. I would bet it is something he just doesn't want to do or can't for lack of equipment. These engines usually are close to not needing bored for the size, usually it is the out of round condition that makes it bad. There was a guy who put a 1.6 head ...
