Well, went and brought it down from Maine this weekend to Boston. It's really nice. :D Thanks for the tips. I have heard that keeping the cooling sys working right on these is the most important thing. Car seems to run cool and uses no oil (in fact the dipstick shows a little high right now). PO jus...

Bought a Volvo diesel.

Just picked up a car that I had been searching a long time for. :D It's a 1985 Volvo 740 wagon with the D24T turbodiesel 2.4L straight six engine. Insides are just like a 1.6TD, but with 2 extra cylinders, same engine VW used in the european LT35 vans. It has the very rare manual transmission too. 1...

your overall gear ratio will be higher (numerically) and provides less torque to the ground. Not to nitpick, but don't you mean numerically lower? Higher numbers mean a shorter gear. Lower numbers are a taller gear, less multiplication of torque, and lower revs. Bigger tires results in higher tange...

I had been chasing a similar problem for over a year until I finally solved it two weeks ago. My Rabbit had gone through 4 alternators in the space of about 5,000 miles. Each time, I would replace it and the problem would seem to be solved for awhile... then one night I would be out driving somewher...

Good to hear it. I should have posted on this thread awhile ago -- I had huge oil consumption issues on my Rabbit when I got it at 223k (was burning a quart every 150 miles!!). Did a hone and re-ring with the block in the car, as you probably did, used German rings of some kind that I now forget the...

Well, problem solved. Idhoho, you nailed it with the wiring around the battery. I knew it wasn't a belt issue, since I could see it turning fine, had no noise, and I did have the batt light going off after a rev, even though it wasn't charging. I figured I'd check wiring again, starting with looking...

Another thing I should note: with all these alts, the most charging volts I've ever seen at the batt when running, above idle, was about 13.5. This as opposed to the 14.5 or so I'm used to seeing on all other cars. Significant? Dunno. It has always charged well enough, except for when these alts fai...

'81 Rabbit eating alternators

I had thought most Rabbits like carrots, but it appears that mine likes alternators better. Just had my alt die, and it's the FOURTH to go in the last 12,000 miles. I am beginning to wonder what is going on. What could cause alternators to burn out so fast? I'm stumped. Battery is known good,...

You're sure it's not the fan cycling on and off? I can definitely feel it in the idle when mine kicks on.

Yep they will fit, and will look a lot nicer than your steelies too. Ziptar you're in Winchester? That's right near where I spend a lot of my time... I go to Tufts Univ, down in Medford, but often run or ride my bike up around the top of Upper Mystic Lake, right into Winchester. Beautiful area. So m...

Oh yeah, also, if I'm traveling through some really unpopulated areas where I know I'd be in big trouble if the car died, like the high desert, I carry two spare tires. Never had to use both, but had to use one once before in the middle of nowhere, and with the nearest tire shop probably hundreds of...

What to bring? Lots of faith. You'll make it. My point of view about taking long trips in these cars is, yeah, they're old and parts are probably worn out, and something might break. However, these things have no computers, no crazy wiring, no funny stuff... so if something does break, there'...

Yep, had the same problem with my Rabbit, same solution. I used those thin little C-shaped body shims since the thinnest washer I could find still jacked the door end up too much. One shim did the trick just perfect. Door works like new.
