Sorry to bring this one back from the dead. I think I might have discovered something that I should have discovered a long time ago. On a yellow-dot pump, where exactly is the yellow dot located? Is it a thick blob of paint on the front side of the pump, right underneath where the fuel inlet line co...

Alright, after a hiatus due to schoolwork I'm back on this problem, trying to get the Rabbit on the road again. Someone that knows charging systems could really help me out here: what kind of power do I need to see at the end of that wire going to the alternator's D+ terminal? On the Rabbit, I get b...

Thanks for the great response. I hadn't thought of those fusible links but I will definitely check them out, as well as getting into all the grounds and batt connections with sandpaper and really cleaning them up. And I'll get another fresh alternator and see what that does. Will report back. Thanks.

charging system hell

I have been having some pretty strange problems with my charging system lately and wanted to get some input on one thing I have noticed. The symptoms are that, when my alternator does charge, it charges only at about 13.4v, and most of the time it does not charge at all. Not just really low charge v...

In my folks' Passat TDI we notice a decrease of about 3 mpg running B100 versus running straight diesel. But that car was designed to run on modern ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel that has no lubrication and as such the main injection parts are lubed by engine oil instead. So the only effect of the bio...

OK, I finally got my electric line heaters on. And they made no difference whatsoever. The clacking noises that I and wewantutopia have described were still fully present and occurred just as quickly after switchover to VO as before. I know the lines were getting hot because I could see them smoking...

Haven't even got the line heaters on yet, unfortunately...I'm a student and have had no time to do car stuff lately. Will update you guys once I get it all set up on whether it works or not.

I would contact German Transaxle in Bend, OR. The Volvo Diesels used a ZF automatic transmission, not the Aisin-Warner (AW) type that the gas cars used, and ZF is a German brand so they might have it. In any case they could probably direct you to someone who knows. Northern European Auto Recyclers i...

I always jam a flat-blade screwdriver in between a bolt head and the hub of the water pump flange that sticks out through the middle of the pulley, and reef against that to break them loose. Taking off the pulley is the easiest way for sure. In fact, because it is so difficult (on my car at least) t...

It's the fuel exploding suddenly. Reason it happens when it's cold is that the fuel does not ignite right away after being injected into a cold cylinder -- it sits for a split-second, then explodes with a bang. That's why you get all that extra rattle, shaking, and vibration when it's cold. Once it'...

Yeah, it does seem retarded-timing related, especially since mine actually stops clacking by pulling the CS out (in the early stages of the clacking, before it gets really bad -- after 10 minutes nothing fixes it except switching back to diesel). But how do you make sense of the fact that it only st...

That describes my problem EXACTLY. You're sure there's no air in the lines? My previous theory was that the high revs caused the vane pump to pull harder on the fuel system, sucking in air where it wouldn't have if the revs/power demand stayed low. But I checked and had no air in my lines. My next t...

Uh oh. I wonder what that will mean for my car...I'll report back once I get mine on, we'll see what effect it has. If it's not this, I'm suspecting problems with the injector pump. I can't think of anything else! :?

I always try to use OEM-style Continental belts. I get them from my local import specialty parts supplier in Seattle, or from Jack. I voted "other".
