We put a '91 TD Jetta engine in an '82 Caddy but never quite finished the install before we sold it. The breather needed to be custom made, we could not find a Rabbit TD breather as they are extremely rare around here. The passenger side motor mount needed to be switched as I remember and the exhaus...

I change oil on all our vehicles at 5000km. I use #30 diesel oil in the summer and #10W-30 in the winter. In the dead of winter I use #5W-20, for easier starting. Phil

I'm not sure of the plumbing on that car. The A2's had the check valve in the supply line, I believe. If it doesn't, then opening the water drain would have the same effect as on the Rabbit fuel system; air will be sucked in as the fuel drains back downhill to the tank. We had a persistent air bubbl...

It must have a blue fog out the back when you drive it :D . Must be piston rings. I can't imagine valve guides and seals ever letting that much oil out. Maybe someone would add their experience with worn guides. Quite a few here have done the in-frame rebuild. I think the only problem you would have...

Years ago pits were in almost every garage, that's what I recall as a kid when my dad took me around to different local garages on the weekend. He would always buy me a pop :D . I'd love to have a pit but I'm on the rock. If I dig from the side hill outside I can get under the layers of rock and get...

Yes those are all very good points. It never hurts to take time out to talk about safety. I had never really given alot of thought to covering a pit up when not in use. Most of the old original pits I've seen have a ledge on both sides that fits a hardwood board 3" thick. I do hate crawling und...

Dubdoc, The parts look great, the new tail lights will really shine. Speaking of a pit, I'm thinking of making an outside pit on the edge of a hill right by my garage. One that I can walk in from the end. Just can't figure out how to make it without concrete. Guy down the road had his mechanic burn ...

I see my '85 Ranger with the Mitsubishi diesel has a vacuum pump that discharges into the atmosphere, through an attached filter. When I bought my Caddy originally it had what looked like a factory made hose with the 'T's molded in it, to help vent the lower part of the crankcase to the valve cover,...

I believe the older style vacuum(diaphragm) pumps discharged by way of an external hose back into the crankcase. The newer style vacuum pump discharged air internally through a port in its mounting base, into the engine. Leaving the hose detached on the engine side allowed crankcase vapours to pour ...

Well I don't know what to make of that last paragraph you posted. No need to post a pic of the pit bull. Too bad you don't have a car dolly to pick it up with. I miss my Caddy, bad, even though I found an original diesel Ranger to fix up, I still miss her.....but wait, I do have a pic :D . Phil http...

Going back and reading your second thread Caddyman it suggests you ran the engine off a separate fuel supply. Try a vacuum guage on your fuel supply line next to the pump inlet. Good thing to have plumbed in permanently. My limited experience is that the engine will just die when the vacuum reading ...

I've been reading this thread with particular interest since my son's '97 Jetta has an intermittent miss(every 2 to 5 seconds approx.) after the glow plugs turn off. I can't remember how long the glow plugs stay on, maybe 3-5 minutes after starting. A few minutes later it starts running smooth again...

Man what a story, complete with picture too. Never abandon a Caddy, they are just too hard to find. Do let us know what happens. Send us progress reports. Phil
