I've got no seepage or anything, I was just following the directions. I will probably do it today or tomorrow, at around 1500 miles.

thanks!

head retorque questions

I am coming up on the 1000 mile retorque for my head gasket. Is that done with the engine warm ? I'm getting ready to go on a road trip tomorrow, if I can't do it right on the 1000 mile mark, would it be better to do it a couple hundred ahead of time or a few hundred miles later?

Diesel here was at $3.89 yesterday, I've seen it at $3.91. I have to drive to CA tomorrow and I'm sure it will be well over $4 there. I switched to a diesel truck from an old gasser right before the iraq war started. My gas truck got 8-9mpg, my diesel gets 15-17 average. For a couple of years I drov...

interesting thread. I am working on these same questions right now on my 89 Jetta. My first mileage check yesterday was a meager 35 mpg. I KNOW it should be better than that! I put new nozzles in my injectors, but couldn't find a shop locally that would test them for me, so I just put them in and ra...

I thought about making one with one of the old bolts, but figured I could get them clean enough with the wire brush and whatnot.

I hope I was right!

I couldn't get a tap here locally, you start talking VW and metric at the local parts house and their eyes sort of glaze over. What I did was scrub all the bolt holes out with a wire brush and then cleaned the holes out with q tips, paper towels and rags until they came out pretty clean. I hope that...

so far, I've driven over 100 miles on the repair with no repeats of the failing belt. I think I fixed it.

now i just need to figure out the fine tuning of the engine.

thanks, all!

wow, what a great story! I had a similar but less sensational version of that same trip. Except I had to drive at night, and I only got about 60 miles before the lights got so dim it was dangerous to drive and shortly after that, the fuel shut off valve shut from lack of voltage. Same thing with the...

I managed to get another german contitech belt from town yesterday, and removed one of the shims under the tensioner post. I put it back together and the belt fits nicely in the alternator pulley, without sticking way up above it. It does ride a little high on the AC compressor. I tightened it up an...

The contitech belts that I have been getting say made in Germany on them, but I don't see an 068 VW part number, just the AVX 10x whatever the length is. I don't see any numbers or symbols on the outside of the pulley, maybe it has one on the inside face, but I can't see it. I am going to get a new ...

ha! I think I found the problem. I finally got to work on it in the daylight and I put a straightedge along the various pulleys. The tensioner pulley is off to the side by about 3-4mm, looks like there are a couple of washers under the little post that the pulley sits on. I think if I move those aro...
