Re: bearing with me

The front bearings are pressed into the hub. FYI, I've never had a bit of luck with Napa or Carquest/Advance or any other bearings. I prefer to buy german bearings online for them. Your best bet is to remove each steering knuckle and take it to a shop to have the old ones pressed out and new ones pr...

Re: Mercedes 300D turbo on VW 1.6?

I used to converse with a fellow from this forum who did this.. took a turbo from a mercedes and put it on his Golf. It required some modification of the firewall, but he did it. I can't remember the particulars, but it was a little laggy but pulled pretty good.

Re: Turbo help needed

A leakdown test would be a good way to determine the condition of the rings/valves/etc.

Yeah, thats what happened to my fathers TDI. I'd go ahead and replace the rear main seal while you're in there as well.

Re: OIL PRESSURE

A friend of mine told me 8psi at the head is enough to hold it together. Keep in mind, that is a minimum. Not sure what the specified pressure is.

Re: Box of rocks in 4 sp. tranny.

That'll do it too. That actually happened on my father's TDI, and I had forgotten about it. The springs came loose in his clutch and rounded the bolts off that bolted the flywheel to the engine. Luckily, an impact socket removed them.

Re: Box of rocks in 4 sp. tranny.

Yeah, it wasn't a bad job. I got lucky and was able to use a lift at a friend's garage, who happened to stock all the parts I needed including the tranny shaft seal and bushing, cv flange seals (I think thats what they are) and all the tools I needed to do it. He was a volkswagen / foreign car mecha...

Re: Box of rocks in 4 sp. tranny.

Well, I had this happen but it was on an A2 Jetta. Just bought it and driving back home lost the clutch about 65 miles from home. Accused my then wife of not using the clutch but she was. So, I drove it home without a clutch and removed the transmission. The little button the clutch rod pushes into ...

Re: Wintertime hard starting

Do you have the cold start lever out when starting in the cold months where it doesn't start good? Or is it in, or do you ever even use it? Some were finicky and needed it out to start cold, most I've found start better with it in, and when its running, pull it out. Are you applying some accelerator...

Re: Injection Pump Questions

The main shaft seal can be done with the pump in the car, but you'll need the sprocket puller or some puller to get the pump sprocket off. I would stop driving it, fuel leaking on to the belt will cause the rubber to soften and inevitably snap, which is not a good thing, because then you'll end up w...

I used FAG bearings in mine, never had an issue. When I used Carquest/Napa bearings, I was in there replacing them again in a years time.

Re: no charge... at a loss

Well if the stock systems been bypassed, that kinda rules that out. Even if the relay were there, it would have no current going through it. I've had alternators with bad diodes charge a small load but not anything major. Its probably worth the time to have it checked out at the very least. If it is...

Re: no charge... at a loss

Just a thought. Get the car warmed up good, up to operating temperature. (At night, seems you have issues with this at night when accessories are on) and pull the glow plug relay out of the panel. I'm wondering if your glow plug relay is sticking on which is causing the massive drop in voltage. Thos...

Re: moaning while turning

My guess is left side wheel bearing. Jack the left wheel off the ground slightly (so it isn't touching). Grab the tire at the top, and bottom, and push the top in and pull the bottom out. (I think I described that correctly). If theres any movement top-to-bottom, its most likely a wheel bearing. Tho...

Re: door handle broke

The cylinder doesn't slide out until you put the key in and try to pop it out. The tumblers in the cylinder will hold it in even without the screw in, so if you take the screw and the actuator lever thingy on the end of it off, and put your key in, it should pop right out. You may need to turn it a ...
