Re: Compression Test VS Leakdown Test, Why Do Both?

Thanks, Tyler Durden !! I don't see a good reason for ME to do a compression test. Your write-up stresses the value of the leak-down test for sure. Don't get me wrong, when the time comes I will do both tests. However, I just don't see any value in the compression test except curiosity as to what nu...

Compression Test VS Leakdown Test, Why Do Both?

Why bother with a compression test, unless you don't have a leak down tester??? If there is say, 10% leakage, wouldn't the compression be right up there??? Is it possible to have low leakage and still have bad compression numbers??? Doesn't the leak down test tell it all??? Low leakage and, if not, ...

Re: Outer Intermediate Shaft Bearing Replacement Engine In Vehicle

So, do the bearings come out with the shaft?

The inner must come out with the shaft. How about the one near the pulley???

Power Steering Flush and Fill

Original components on the car. I'm the original owner. I've never flushed the system and have only added "power steering" fluid without much thought about it. I'd like to flush the system and fill with the appropriate(???) fluid. Dexron 3 ATF and Pentosin 11S are the top contenders. Flush...

Outer Intermediate Shaft Bearing Replacement Engine In Vehicle

Can the outer intermediate shaft bearing (the one nearest to the pulley) be replaced with the engine in the vehicle??

Reading around I somehow got the idea that this might be possible.

Comments????

Power Steering Fluid for MK2??

What would be an acceptable power steering fluid for my 1991 MK2 rather than the VW G 002 000 special fluid that is mentioned in Bentley?

Oil Pan Replacement Tricks??

I'll be working under the car with the front end up on ramps.

I know I have to be careful replacing the bolts so they don't strip out.
I guess the ones near the tranny can be a problem???

Are there any tricks in replacing the pan and gasket to make the job a little easier????

Re: 36 mm Oil Pump Needs Longer Bolts

Checking with my local VW dealer......they stock the M8x90 bolts so I can pick them up there if my existing bolts do not match up to the new pump.

I'll update..........

Used Engine Value???

"Early 1.6 and 5 pseed trans pulled from a vw truck. Engine turns over and has good compression. Trans turns freely and shifts smooth. Selling as a pair for $600 " Is this a good deal?? Yeah, I know......"it depends", right????? I've sent an email and asked a few questions. Any t...

36 mm Oil Pump Needs Longer Bolts

I'm upgrading to a German 36 mm oil pump. This pump is suppose to be a replacement for the one in the turbo engine. Glancing at the forums I see that it might require longer attachment bolts since the body is taller due to the 36 mm gears. The pump did not come with the longer bolts. Can someone tel...

Re: Oil Pan Removal 1991 MK2 Jetta 1.6 Diesel

CLUTCH COVER WITH GASKET The seal was a little swollen, but it clung to the plate just good enough to place it in position. Not leak proof, but ok to keep dirt out. Not much oil there so I think I can assume that the rear seal is not too bad off for 290,000 miles. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3835...

Oil Pan Removal 1991 MK2 Jetta 1.6 Diesel

Engine info below. I want to remove the oil pan and inspect the sump, oil pump and crankshaft area. I'm not finding any details on this in Bentley's. It looks like there should be a couple more bolts near the transmission (green arrow) behind the plate (red arrow) which is held on to the tranny hous...

Yeah, Jacks is an attractive option......I like the fact that he specializes in VW diesel engines....
I'm keeping his services on the top of my list. It would be nice to have him in my town though.

Looking for Rebuilder/Remanufacturer Vendor Portland, Or

Things are looking marginal in the oil pressure area and I may have to bite the bullet for a rebuilt or remanufactured engine. I'm fishing around for a good re-builder in the Portland, Oregon/Vancouver, WA area. Internet provides a few, but does anyone know, by reputation, of a good one in this area...
