Re: Low Compression Repair Procedure????

If it comes to pulling the engine then, what else would you rebuild after almost 300,000 miles??? Certainly clutch and related components. What about the tranny??? I do get a little crunch when going into 2nd gear once in a while. The injection pump and injectors rebuilt, front seals.....all new rec...

Say a compression check shows unacceptable, low cylinder pressures............ How is the repair accomplished????? Can the head be checked out for leaks, warpage, etc. if it is pulled and out of the car??? What about the block and cylinders??? Can they be honed, etc. and new pistons, rings fitted if...

The Sound of Solenoids

My car: 1991 MK2 1.6 diesel, NA The injection pump was recently rebuilt by a reputable diesel specialty shop in Portland, OR…..Diesel Fuel Injection Service. I has the two solenoids; fuel shutoff and cold start. They look the same, but have different Bosch part numbers. The fuel shut valve will make...

Re: Availability of Injector Type Compression Test Adapter??

OK. I see the Harbor Freight tester....#93644 is the one I'm looking at.....about $30. I noticed that the one shown on the HF webpage has "12 pieces" and the one shown on the attached PDF of the 93644 Owner Manual has about 19 pieces shown. I'll have to check this out at Harbor Freight. Mo...

Availability of Injector Type Compression Test Adapter????

Does someone make an Injector Type Adapter for compression testing the VW 1.6 non-turbo diesel engine? My car is a 1991 MK2 with the 1.6 engine. I'm the original owner. Otherwise, the glow plug type adapter would require the removal of the injection pump.....I think. I'd like to avoid that if possib...

Re: Remove power steering

just make sure you have all the right pulleys to run one belt with. EcoTX, I'm at a slight loss here because I don't have my car in front of me......1991 MK2 Jetta diesel, non-turbo, with PS, without AC. Do you think I have to do any pulley swapping to use the EAA jumper kit???? I don't think so si...

Re: Remove power steering

ECOTX, Thanks for the show and tell. Mine is a 1991 MK2 with power steering.........I can live with it, but I'm an old Beetle man and love to get rid of junk that is not needed I replaced the original 14 inch rims with 13 inchers so that I could buy cheaper tires that work better in the snow and are...

Re: Barb in the Radiator??? Could Plug.

One has to be careful not to overtighten the screw/rack hose clamps so much that the rubber extrudes through the holes in the rack in which the screw turns. There is a style of screw clamp that does not have a rack and the clamping band does not have holes so, then, that is not a concern. $$$$$$ The...

Re: Draining coolants

Thanks, Tyler.

Bentley says capacity is 6.5 liters or 1.7 gallons........so we should get about 6 liters or just a little over 1.5 gallons.

I'll give it a try some time.

Re: Remove power steering

Here is the link to EAA Engineering who makes the conversion kit....... http://www.eaaengineering.com/steering-conversion-kits-lines/steering-de-power-conversion-kit/ It has a jumper from the input to the output of the PS rack...... It seems like it would provide for easier steering rather than just...

Instrument Cluster 28 Pin Connector Data, MK2

Mine is a 1991 MK2 Jetta 1.6 diesel, non-turbo. Here is a helpful table showing the pins that are used (in my model) and what they are for. It was helpful in diagnosing my dead electrical panel systems. In my case, it turned out to be a loose fuse mount (discovered just by chance) and a voltage stab...
