Yeah they are supposed to prevent vibration. It's easier to just replace all 4 with new ones that are clamped together then frig around with the clamps. What's worse is that it's way too easy for the clamps to fall apart in your hand and drop down into where your timing belt is. I think I'll invest...

Drilling the lock doesn't hurt a thing, it's only so you can poke a wire in and compress the spring that holds it in.....it should've been done by volkwagen. Rats you guy's beat me to it!! :P A few years ago we thought we'd lost the keys to a '86 golf and I'm pretty sure the locksmith told me the code was in the passenger side handle :? I spoze I could've fergotten which handle he said though......... P.S. The key wasn't really lost, Dad grabbed the golf...
