Re: Battery Alternator light
Would be nice to see what your voltage is when it blinks - any way you can rig up a cheap multimeter to a 12v line? Harbor Freight's chespest meter works reasonably well for automotive troubleshooting. Could just be a loose ground or could be signs of the alternator going bad. Check every connection...

Re: The unthinkable.
Good luck with that!. Just changed the oil on my 06 PD at 88K miles, so far it's run like a dream and still mileage in the 40's in spite of the crappy new bridgestone tires that are apparently high rolling resistance. Won't buy those again. Loved the General altimax tires but one developed horrible ...

Re: The unthinkable.
Wow. be glad you don't have a PD motor. I understand they won't handle gas at all. Don't want to find out.

Re: MK1 200mm Clutch judder in first
I had one machined for $60 but two surfaces must be machined in order to maintain the distance between the clutch disk contact area and the pressure plate mounting surface. Mine had no overheated spots though. You may be able to find a decent used one that can be cleaned up. This is definitely a mil...

Put your location in your profile please. I have spare rims both 13" and 14" but shipping is pricey so if you tell us where you are maybe one of us is close by.

Re: anyone fix a worn out alternator
Looks exactly like mine but the through hole for the pivot hasn't wallowed out quite that badly yet. On mine the bushings that reside between the alternator housing and the mounting bracket wore out allowing it to wobble. I made some shims to hammer in there (not a great solution) and that helped bu...

Re: volvo penta powerless
is sounds like it could be fuel starvation but that's just a guess. Also without knowing what your air intake configuration is you should check to make sure that is not restricted either. Make sure you don't have any restrictions in the fuel line that feeds the pump inlet. Also double check all of y...

Re: '85 NA Golf dial gauge timing. Hold my hand, friends.
yes you will need to move the belt on the pump to make that all work. Generally you will have the crank at the TDC mark, the cam set such that the slot on the driver's side is exactly parallel to the head surface, and the mark on the pump pulley lined up with the mark on the pump bracket. That's the...

Re: Trying to convince my Wife that my Rabbit would make a great 1st car for our Son...
yeah and as the original owner of my first car told me the way to get good mileage is to tape an egg to the gas pedal and make 'em drive barefoot!
I never got much over 10 mpg out of my 63 Valiant 6 cylinder. Should have used the egg.

Re: Trying to convince my Wife that my Rabbit would make a great 1st car for our Son...
My son got my 80 rabbit for his first car. I taught him that he was the primary safety device in his car and he fully understood and drove accordingly. That was 10 years ago and while he has moved on to a 2010 TDI golf he has never needed air bags and has never had an accident. So safety equipment i...

Re: 83 Vanagon 1.6 (timing belt questions)
Again I don't know the Vanagon configuration but I would expect that you can do it all in the vehicle as you can in all the VW diesels. Below is a small write-up I did a few years ago summarizing the alignment process but if you get the engine at top dead center, lock the cam properly, and keep the ...

Re: Brake Problems...
I once pumped almost a quart of brake fluid into the rear carpet and padding on my 79 Rabbit before I found the brake line leak. I did not know they ran them inside under the carpeting. It's amazing how much brake fluid carpet & padding can hold before you see it. Now of course I am better infor...

Re: 83 Vanagon 1.6 (timing belt questions)
it is not hard generally speaking but I have only done it on Rabbits. The Vanagon engine may be a little harder to do due to the engine placement and I can't say what's involved in accessing flywheel tdc marks and getting to the cam. I would expect the process is much the same but it is essential th...

Re: Please help 1.9 aaz engine in my samurai
so you don't know where your timing marks are? I don't know the 1.9 but usually the flywheel has a tdc mark you can see through a hole in the bell housing. Given that this is in a Samurai and you probably have some sort of transmission adapter that could be iffy. for the cam timing I assume there is...

Re: Please help 1.9 aaz engine in my samurai
not necessarily. Mine needs to have glow plugs up to about 65 degrees but compression is low. Either way you probably need them for some heat to start it. Otherwise a block heater might do the trick after 3-4 hours.
