Re: VERY Rough Running

Update: I got a call from my machine shop and the head is in perfect shape. They checked everything, the surface thickness is still at the original spec, the valves and guides etc are all in working order, vacuum tests, etc etc. So...Nothing wrong there. @ "air-cooled or diesel" - when i l...

Re: VERY Rough Running

Me too - that's why i totally overlooked it at first glance. Cam timing seems improbably, since i've reset the cam/shaft timing twice now, with no change. I wouldn't doubt i could screw it up, but twice in the exact same way seems unlikely. What kind of gasket error would cause this? Maybe overtight...

Re: VERY Rough Running

Hmm.. There was a decent amount of coolant in the third cylinder when i pulled the head off, maybe a couple tablespoons, but there was also some in #2, and i heard some spillage when i pulled the head so i just assumed there was still coolant in the head passages that leaked when the head was pulled...

Re: VERY Rough Running

I ran through all the cycles by hand, and to me the valves all seem to be functioning properly. I never quite understood the whole sequence - how they valves drop in pairs, but then also seem to hang just barely open at other times. I would suspect something wrong but they do it pretty consistently....

Re: VERY Rough Running

So the head is off, and thankfully the piston crowns look great, as do the valve seats. The only thing that really looks out of ordinary to me is that there is no carbon buildup on the head in cylinder 3, where all the trouble has been. Piston protrusion looks fine to me. I'm going to pop the cam pu...

Re: VERY Rough Running

The original follower i suspected didn't have too much sign of damage - it only differed from the others in that the nubbin fell out when i pulled it out of the head, and it had no spring in it compared to all the others. There was gouges and notching around the base, slightly more than the others, ...

Re: VERY Rough Running

I don't know. Is there a way to determine that without opening up the head?

Mine are the hydraulic lifters without the adjusting discs - i was under the impression those are self adjusting.

Re: VERY Rough Running

Bad news! New Followers are in and there's no change. Still the same tapping, lots of white smoke, and loosening injector #3 makes no change in performance. A little bit of blow-by, the dipstick gets pushed up about half an inch with lots of throttle, but not more than was occurring before these pro...

TylerDurden wrote: I let my followers sit inverted with ATF in the buckets for a few days to let the atf creep in. Then, as per Bentley, install the cam and let the followers bleed down for 30min or so before firing it up.

Why ATF and not oil? The new followers are already coated in oil

Re: VERY Rough Running

I pulled the followers and found that the "internal cylinder spring thing" (that's the technical term i imagine) in the follower in question (#5 from the pulley) doesn't depress hardly at all. It fell out when i lifted the follower out, and doesn't work close to the same as all of the othe...

Re: VERY Rough Running

update: I pulled the cam shaft, and pressing on the all of the followers the left follower on cylinder #3 (5th valve from the pulley), doesn't depress with the same ease as the rest of them do. It moves down slightly, but has much less spring and travels much less. I'm working on pulling the followe...

Re: VERY Rough Running

The engine turning by hand shows good compression from what i can tell, it gives resistance at the right time (i can't remember the exact angle). I've had some blow-by for about 10k miles, but nothing i've been too worried about. The dipstick is usually pushed up about an inch. Nothing like it was b...

Re: VERY Rough Running

I worked out the compression reading issues, it was mostly due to fittings that weren't sealed well. With a cold engine (I'm nervous about causing more damage by running it for a half hour, but will if i need to) i got readings of 340,340,290,360. So basically low pressure all around, but obviously ...

Re: VERY Rough Running

I couldn't find anything in bentley on a wooden stick procedure. I am working on compression readings (more on that in a sec), and did notice that i can hear air escaping the valves, along with a few tiny bubbles in the oil around the valves, when each respective cylinder is nearing TDC. Is that nor...
