Re: Freshly rebuilt pump, slightly high idle and some smoke

Will the extra fuel cause the engine to run hotter at all? I believe I read that on a diesel, more fuel makes for higher EGT's..?

Re: Freshly rebuilt pump, slightly high idle and some smoke

Cool, that's kind of what I was thinking. I started it up this morning, granted, it's not cold out, probably 60f, but hadn't been started in 14 hours or so, and it fired up so fast I couldn't let go of the key fast enough. So the timing can't be THAT far off. It did seem like it wanted me to press t...

Freshly rebuilt pump, slightly high idle and some smoke

I finished installing my rebuilt pump yesterday. I did my best to set the timing on it. Seemed like every time I'd rotate the engine a couple turns and re-check my setting, it'd be a slightly different reading than the time before... I read a half dozen methods for setting the timing online, they're...

Re: What's involved in a turbo upgrade?

I was told when I bought it, that it's an 82 motor, so it should have 12mm headbolts.
I definitely have a hard time wrapping my head around diesel engines.. How does the extra air get utilized if the pump doesn't know it's there?
Good to know it'll work though. :)

Re: Thermostat

Yeah, if the gauge were just sitting at a quarter constantly, I'd just chock it up to the gauge, as long as the heater worked.. But it was all over the place until I changed that thermostat and the coolant. It's now just below halfway, and seems to stay there at all times. I'm happy.

What's involved in a turbo upgrade?

Say I wanted to toss a turbo onto my '81 Rabbit. And assume I'm intimately familiar with installing turbo's on motors (gas ones, anyways) so I can figure out the manifold and plumbing and stuff. The part I'm not familiar with is doing it on a diesel. I see I can toss a gasser intake onto the motor t...

Re: What a day...

Yeah, I got it all done. Next time I have to do that kind of maintenance to the car, I'll be much better versed in exactly which parts to ask for, for this car. Sad part was that the next day after I got it all back together, the injection pump started leaking profusely, so I got to take it all back...

Re: Injection pump leaking

Already spent a small fortune to have a rebuilt on overnighted from Jack.. I just want this car to be a reliable commuter. Everything I replace will get the best possible replacement (brand new gas tank, two weeks ago, for example.. Or the brand new hoses, water pump, thermostat, timing belt, tensio...

Re: Bentley for a 79 on an 81?

Anyone know where I can buy the pump timing adapter tool, without buying it online or special ordering it somewhere? Is it something that Sears, or Napa or Autozone or something stocks? I have a dial indicator, but not that adapter. Or, has anyone come up with a diy type solution that will work in a...

Bentley for a 79 on an 81?

Can I use a Bentley for a '79 diesel Rabbit to set the pump timing on my '81? I'm getting a rebuilt pump tomorrow (thanks Jack), and I don't have any kind of manual for this car yet. The local used book store has a Bentley for '75-'79 Rabbit/Scirocco including diesel.. So I'm wondering if the timing...

Re: Simple timing belt change

I don't have the tool to lock the pump and cam down. Looks like now that I need an injection pump rebuild, I probably will get those tools along with the dial for the pump timing. As for the marks, yeah, roughly noon, 3 and 6.. I just kind of picked a spot that was nice and visible. I'd definitely r...

Re: Simple timing belt change

Thanks for the tip. I went and did the belt that way, and took pictures. Worked like a champ. http://www.neonsquirt.com/tb1.jpg http://www.neonsquirt.com/tb2.jpg http://www.neonsquirt.com/tb3.jpg http://www.neonsquirt.com/tb4.jpg I drew the picture to help visualize it all. Injection pump leaking

I fired up my Rabbit after work today, and diesel started pouring out under the engine. Popped the hood while it was idling so I could find the problem hose. It wasn't a hose. Seems to be coming out the cold start advance lever's bushing. What a pain this car is being to me! I will beat it, someday.

Re: Thermostat

In that case, you're still using half of the unreliable factory setup.
