Project update
Well, it's been a while since I posted anything.... not much to post. Just removed the injectors and the heat shields just now from the used head. Searched here and found out it was 1 1/16"- at least I had a box end that big (head is off). I had an impact socket that size, but it went away....b...

Re: black coolant
I believe that I have a oil leak into my coolant. A little history so maybe I can get this repaired easily. I just replaced the timing belt and head gasket. I am thinking that I may have put the gasket in wrong side up. Is that possible. I remember looking for some marking on it and could not find ...

It's been verified! Head bolts are still stock 11mm- a 11mm nut fits fine, 12mm is WAY loose. The used head also arrived today. Man, the section between the valves looks great! One had no cracks at all. Another had a little bit, not much, much smaller then what was on the head that came w/ the car. ...

Re: Still lost somewhat....
Open for suggestions. I need to determine the correct head so that I can advise the fellow who has offered one. I understand I should not use the TORX 6-point socket to remove the bolt. Have 3 questions ... First, I have never removed a head, or even a head bolt. If I remove one to ascertain if it ...

Gathering parts
Head is on it's way- ran me $200 shipped. Head looks like it has injectors and it was off a running engine. Unfortunately, the did NOT cover the hole when the lines were removed. :( Maybe to be safe, I'll reuse the injectors off the head that was with the car... unless I want to risk trying to clean...

Well, as people have stated, NA diesels can be turboed. But just don't abuse them. An excellent example of other NA diesels that have been turboed are the Ford/IH 6.9L IDI, 7.3L IDI, Chevy 6.2L and the early 6.5L. Everything I have seen on the 6.9/7.3 IDI says to have a pyro and keep the temps under...

Okay, I'm pulling up an old post, but I figure I'd use this thread..... (and yes, I have searched.... I've printed to PDF many, many threads here for reference.... Trying to do a crash coarse in learning about 'vintage' 1.5L VW diesel engines.... So, according to the pic here: http://www.vwdieselpar...
