I do not know on the mk1 but my 86 jetta has a plastic vent in the fuel neck which is a vent for gassers.
If I hold this open I can get about 1.5 gallons of extra fuel in the tank.

I set a capacitor(555) to run mine for 7 seconds. Works great around here ( 20 F to 100 F )

Second on the diesel purge. A bad injector will tap then go to a rap when really bad.
A not so nice secondary issue is if they leak they will lead to a failed glow plug.
My mailman was so enamored with my diesels he wound up buying a TDI. Guess I spend to many Saturday mornings under the hood.

I have had this happen way too many times. Either my windshield or the the tray is leaking on the insulation above my fuse panel. The carolina chaep ass fix is to wrap a plastic bag around the fuse box. The normal folks willing to spend $5 will run a hose on the winshield and find the leak and silic...
