If it's hard to start after only 10 minutes of sitting, then it's not the heat issue nor the glow plug issue. (Your glow plugs may be a problem, but it's not THE problem if the car is already at operating temp.) Fuel must be siphoning out of the IP and/or fuel filter back to the tank. Fix or replace...

Wasn't your oil pressure a bit low with that bad bearing? Was the bearing damage worst on the side that was receiving pressure from the timing belt? Not sure what caused the thrust face to break; doesn't seem like belt tension would cause that. Maybe somebody put it in already broken?

I agree with the comments about advancing the timing. Lots of white smoke at start-up can be retarded timing. You are starting it with the cold start cable pulled out, right? But make sure you set the timing with it pushed in! I've made that mistake more than once. If you set the timing properly, an...

Windshield success, sort-of.

"Has anyone been successful...?" I went to a local junk yard a couple years ago, looked at all the Rabbits, chose the best windshield, removed it myself, paid $40. Carefully put it in the back of my box truck on some padding and taped it down so it wouldn't slide around. When I opened the ...

Not sure about extending hose life, but silicone grease is amazingly good stuff on non-ferrous surfaces for lubrication and protection, especially rubber. It does not disolve in diesel fuel either, so presumably it would protect hoses from an occasional drip of diesel. Not only does it make puting t...

I know this is probably too late, rabbit-man, but just for the heck of it, I put a torque wrench on a pump in the garage: turning it past the bumps on the cam plate required about 8 ft. lbs.

I liked the idea for making warm air come out of the side vents; doesn't look too hard to do, but I haven't done it yet. I wonder if it doesn't permanently block either fresh air or cold AC air to those vents; does anyone know the answer to that? What I have done to improve the air system is to inst...

I worked on mine again this evening, but without success. The damper(s) is not accessible by removing the fan motor, there is, however, an elongated cover on each side of the main housing just above the floorboard, (attached by screws,) which, after you remove them, allow you to see how much the dam...

Just a quick final update on my odometer; as I later realized it was, in fact, a problem in the odometer gears not the electronics. The little red flat plastic gear was fine, and so was the worm gear it meshed to, but on the opposite end of that same shaft is an aluminum gear that drives everything ...

Best thing to do, probably, is look at some pictures and diagrams of the differences between the NA and the turbo models; the Bentley manuals have pretty good diagrams in them. Here's a short list besides the turbo itself: oil pan with fitting for oil return from turbo, oil cooler with filter flange...

I'm having a similar problem, and I've been partway inside the dash to try to fix it, but it's deeper, and I've given up. Here's a bit of what I've seen in the book and in the car. There are three vacuum units: one at the fresh air flap under the rain tray which you mentioned; one just left of the g...

There's a rod running from the bottom of the shifter knob lever toward the front of the car; clamped on the end of that rod is the selector lever. The tiny splines are on the end of the rod where the selector lever slides over it. I would say, though, that if your shifting is getting progressively w...
