Wasn't your oil pressure a bit low with that bad bearing? Was the bearing damage worst on the side that was receiving pressure from the timing belt? Not sure what caused the thrust face to break; doesn't seem like belt tension would cause that. Maybe somebody put it in already broken?

I agree with the comments about advancing the timing. Lots of white smoke at start-up can be retarded timing. You are starting it with the cold start cable pulled out, right?
