Re: 020 Tranny Replacement Clarity, please
gear ratio is important. 020 is the mechanical style so technically all 020's will bolt up but there are some minor differences and some involve bolts vs. studs for one of the mounting points - I think that may be where the rear transmission mount bolts up. Again ratio is important with the diesel a...

Re: Oil Pan Replacement Tricks??
That's good to know (ABA rubber gaskets) Last one I did was on my '80 Rabbit which I sold about 10 years ago. gasket was made of a material that was cork with rubber impregnated in it which sealed nicely but also took to some gasket sealer well, allowing it to stick to the pan perfectly. And I may w...

Re: Oil Pan Replacement Tricks??
It's been over a decade since i did one but used a bit of gasket sealer to secure the gasket to the pan and then put the pan in place with a few bolts to get it positioned. A line long extension for a ratchet (1/4 inch) works nice to get up in there. Beyond that it's just wrestling with it enough an...

Re: Crankshaft swap
my recollection is that they are not and the stroke on the 1.6 is longer than the 1.5 (thus more torque and displacement).
so crank must be different, would assume rods too. I think the pistons are the same diameter but not 100% sure on that.

Re: AC Charge
does it have a window on the cannister (forget the name, sorry..) that's on the low side? Site glass. If so when I did a conversion on my 81 Dasher I could not quite get all the bubbles out, not sure why. However I did get a decent charge an my mechanic said to be on the safe side don't let the high...

Re: Black smoke under load
professional testing would be a good idea. You need to check spray pattern, pop pressure, and make sure they don't dribble (leak) minimally. I bought rebuilt ones from Jack (forum owner) and saved myself the grief. Between that and a rebuilt pump from him my 82 runs like a top, even in spite of my o...

Re: Timing Belt Tracking
Search the forum on this topic. I seem to remember several postings over the years about what injection pump bolts to tighten first, making sure all 4 bolts are present, worn pump shafts, intermediate shaft bearing wear, and surely more that I can't remember.

Re: Fuel pump going down???
good luck. I always thought a swap into a Fox would be cool. Hope it's something not too hard to fix. I have used in line electric pumps to boost fuel flow to the pump intake but if it's rust then you'll just be pumping more rust into the filter anyway. Not sure if putting a small in line filter bef...

Re: Fuel pump going down???
1000 miles on a filter sounds pretty bad. Wonder if the tank is rusty inside and little grains are clogging up the filter. Maybe a dissection of a used filter would show some nasty stuff.

Re: FS: 1983 Jetta 1.6D with greasecar kit $1200 obo Porter IN
it's a conversion from an electronically controlled TDI injection pump to mechanical. Don't recall the details but it gives most of the tdi performance without the ECU to run it all.

Love that body style. Finding one with little to no rust is nice. However I have way too many cars and am not getting any younger. Good luck with the sale, it has a ton of potential. Would make an awesome TDI swap or MTDI.

Re: Turbo Question
Could not remember specifically what I use so went and found the roll in the garage. Fel Pro 'karropak" is what I have used for 30+ years for things like carburetor gaskets and various other applications - I think it's 1/32 think or possibly slightly thicker. It is available in a variety of thi...

Re: Turbo Question
In a pinch I have made several gaskets myself using sheet gasket material. I secure a piece of material to the flange (tape?) and use a ball-peen hammer to tap gently around the holes to mark where the holes need to be cut out. It may take a couple tries and be careful not to tap too hard to damage ...

Re: 79 VW Rabbit
I bought my Bentley books on ebay but it's been several years. Don't know if any are still around. the ones for the early series used to be more plentiful (77-80 with the 1.5 engine) but I haven't trolled ebay for VW parts for m any years. Yes if you're interested in the piston & ring set just P...

Re: 79 VW Rabbit
Some dislike the older 1.5 liter VW diesels due to lower torque and possible headgasket issues. I had a 1980 Rabbit with the 1.5 and it did go into runaway but I was able to cure it with a valve train shield and the modification to direct some of the valve cover breather tube back into the crank are...
