The cause might be one of these:
Black smoke = over fueling = too little air to combust the quantity of fuel.
White/blue smoke = too little time to completely combust fuel (generally a timing problem, or leaking injectors).

if the cam/trans/ip marks were in alignment then you should have no concern about timing. if you're not 100% certain about then take it back down and double check. your valves will thank you. hope you find the squeak.

You're on the right track imho... next step is to pull the waterpump belt.... you'll be fine for 30-60 seconds of run time. In my experience a water pump squeak can sound a lot like a tensioner squeak... process of elimination should help you narrow it down quickly. also u can take a piece of hose/...

thanx for the input/inspiration crankpot! I've got a fully functioning cruise control now. sweet. got er' up to 55, was on the access road and it worked perfect. tried it last night and was inop, checked the wiring and had switch #6 to on so put it to off and presto. just need to put the dash cover ...

have it all together. will try to get out later and see if it works.
while it was lifted finished replacing the shifter bushings and found the coolant leak that i had been worried was something major: a plastic fitting that had collapsed, fixed that also.
