Re: 86 Jetta rear brake proportioning valve

I have a vacuum brake bleeding system, and it has it's drawbacks. I want to pressure bleed the system this time since the entire system was emptied of fluid.

Re: 86 Jetta rear brake proportioning valve

According to the Bentley, it's either got a proportioning valve at the rear axle, or two proportioning valves located on the master cylinder. Mine has it by the rear axle. This past Saturday, I got all the old rear brake lines pulled and new lines installed. That was a lot of work. I've got all the ...

Re: oil pump drive gear

My vacuum pump shaft has the ovaled out slot in it for the oil pump drive shaft to fit into. Yours (the vacuum pump - not your pully) looks like mine.

Re: Pump not pumping?

If you can turn the engine over with a wrench by hand and have not removed injectors or glow plugs (to eliminate compression) and don't have to really, really work hard at it, then, IMO, the resistance to turning the engine over likely isn't inside the motor.

Re: Pump not pumping?

Even though you put standard rings back in, my question is did you measure the end gaps? The rings could be manufactured wrong or boxed wrong is the point that I'm stressing here. Personally, I would do some more testing before I go back into the motor to rule out other items. The big one is if you ...

Re: Rabbit Speedometer Cable Pics or info?

I got out there today and took some measurements. Under the hood is about 22", there's about 8" in the package tray, and as best I can tell, there's maybe 6" inside the dash area. That comes out to 36". The one cable is listed as being 38" long (and also for automatic trans)...

Re: Pump not pumping?

The piston rings could be too tight. Did you check the end gaps before installing the rings on the pistons and if so, did you check the gaps towards the bottom of the cylinder bore where it has less wear? Did you use an oversize ring for the cylinder bore/piston size without resizing the end gaps to...

Re: Pump not pumping?

Did you replace the starter bushing and lube the new one when you replaced the starters? That could be a source for some binding, and are you sure the bolts are tight on the starter so it's not installed cockeyed a bit?

Rabbit Speedometer Cable Pics or info?

The speedo completely quit working on ole 82 a bit ago. I haven't gotten in there to test it yet, but with 425k miles on it, I'm suspecting that the speedo cable broke. I did pull the end out of the trans and the gear is still on it, so that appears good. I was looking at replacement cables, and I f...

Re: Pump not pumping?

How hot do the wiring connections get when you crank it? You may have a bad ground cable or undersized cable or a bad connection somewhere. Feel for heat along the battery cables. There should be a ground strap that goes from the engine/transmission to the chassis. Also look that this is present.

Re: Radiator Fan Always Running

On Ole 82 that has factory AC, the radiator fan will run when the heater selector switch is set to AC, or if it's set to defrost - AND - the fan switch it lifted to the one higher position than off. So yes, the heater fan can and does control the radiator fan (although not 100% directly). I would su...

Re: white smoke on startup

poor combusion, low compression, incorrect timing, fuel issues, bad injector spray patterns and a few other items cause incomplete fuel combustion that is the smoke you see. Part of the equation on how well fuel combusts is the temperature of the cylinder. You can tweak the timing to see if it goes ...

Re: Wheel Growling Noise

Likely a front wheel bearing is going bad. Typically the bearing that gets unloaded when you shift weight by turning the wheel is the bearing that is bad, but that's not always true.

Re: 86 Jetta rear brake proportioning valve

I figured that. After I posted this message and at the end of my work day I looked on ebay and found them on there for $100. The mechanic I brought the car to said that he couldn't get a new one, so I just left it at that. I've got to get under the car and figure out what I'm going to do on this. Th...

86 Jetta rear brake proportioning valve

This is the proportioning valve that's back by the rear axle under the car. Anyone ever delete one of these on the car? Mine's rusted, likely not functioning and I broke a brake line. If this has been done before, was just a brake line "T" installed in it's place?
