82 Rabbit with AC Alternator mount at the AC bracket
On ole 82 (82 Rabbit with AC), the alternator was wobbling very bad in it's lower mount (the AC mounting bracket). I got a replacement alternator and that comes with a flanged sleeve on the one side of the mounting tab. The mount position on the AC bracket has what looks like a sleeved bushing on it...

Re: tap larger threads in block for oil pan
Use helicoils. You may be able to keep the threads as they are, screw in a helicoil and use a slightly smaller bolt size.

Re: TD Won't Rev
Was the car sitting for a while when you got it? When you run diesel purge, you run it straight from the bottle, and you connect the return line to go back to the bottle so it runs on diesel purge much longer than if it sent the return diesel purge to the fuel tank.

Re: Over Rev at Start
You can change that high pressure o-ring without removing the IP from the engine. You can get a reseal kit from your local Bosch diesel service center. There's a thread that talks about redoing this seal. Specifically read libbybapa's posts starting on page 2 in the link below. This is an easy peasy...

Re: ... another no start puzzle
You'll need to make sure the rings grooves are clear, and what size rings did you get for your standard bore size? You using oversize rings or standard size? Check the end gaps of the rings towards the bottom of where the rings will be when the piston is at the bottom of the stroke. You need to veri...

Re: Fuel and Starting Issues
First, if the hard starting issue is when the engine is cold, check the glow plugs to make sure they are operational. If they are good (which means more than just voltage at the glow plug terminals), then you may have a restriction in the fuel line, fuel filter, or the tank, or the vent hose is plug...

Re: No alt light
There's a feedback wire that runs from the alt (at least on 86 vintage) that runs the alt light. This wire could have a short, a bad connection, or the LED light could be burned out. If you have a Bentley, there should be the wire that runs from the alt back to the dash for this light shown in the w...

Are they? It makes a difference. Did you lightly hone the cylinders so that the new rings will seat properly? A smaller ring compressor will work better than a larger one.greg lousy wrote:They seem right

Re: No heat help.
The top two pics are from my install. The silver tape that I used is special HVAC aluminum backed tape, which is not the stuff you buy in a regular store, or plane duct tape. The layer of silicone on the back is thicker than the plane aluminum backed stuff found in stores, and is extremely sticky. F...

Re: No heat help.
Did the flapper doors inside the heater box have foam on those doors? When you turn the blower fan up high, do you get air coming out of the vents, and if so, does it seem to come out all the vents (defrost, dash and floor) at the same time? If you have the last symptoms, your flapper doors don't ha...

Re: Installed used cam - now I have no compression. Please help
The plastic style will get you in the ballpark, but to know for sure, you'll need to use a real micrometer. Remember to use a wrench on the crank bolt to turn the engine over by hand at least two revolutions before using the key. This is in case you mess up the cam/crank timing and by using manual l...

Re: Installed used cam - now I have no compression. Please help
While I don't know the factural answer to this as I type, my first guess would be that a hydraulic cam and mechanical cam don't have the same base circle. In other words, they aren't the same cam. The base circle of the cam is the part of the lifter lobe where the lifter rides on when it's not openi...

Re: A/C Golf; how to remove crank/waterpump/compressor belt?
I'm not sure what the 85 setup looks like, but on ole 82, I have to remove the alternator to get to the adjustment bolts for the AC compressor to adjust that belt like bscutt said. Pain in the arse, but after 5 or so times of doing it, you know what to do. I also have a special piece of wood that I ...

Re: I need a part number for brake master cylinder
From what I've found out by looking, is there's two different bore diameters available for the master cylinders. Not sure how you'd equate that to a GTI or diesel or any other model designation though. Otherwise, they may interchange, just one may require more or less foot pressure to operate the br...
