Re: Manual steering rack replaced - thoughts on keeping the old one
Is that all there is to a fix for these? The steering rack was replaced once about 15 years ago, so I don't think it's an OEM rack. I wonder if the rebuilt one that's going in there is OEM or a rebuilt aftermarket one....... Makes one think.

Manual steering rack replaced - thoughts on keeping the old one
Ole 82 needs the steering rack replaced. It's a manual steering rack. For the $20 core charge for the old one, should I keep the old one? I really don't need another worn out part hanging around, but does anyone know if it's easily rebuildable? I thought the right inner tie rod was shot, so I brough...

Re: WTB Right rear taillight - 86 Jetta
Thanks for all the offers, and I got one coming. I've had a heck of a few weeks, so I've forgotten to respond to this posting.

Re: 1.6 Head question
Why did you pull the pistons out and do any service work to the block? Did you hone the cylinders before installing new rings, and did you get the ring gaps spaced properly from each other?

Re: Rabbit Door Interchange and Alignment Issues
Ironically, I never noticed the difference of the hinge on the door. I only noticed the hinge on the chassis. Ole 82 has the hinge further forward than the parts car. But, the parts car also appears to have the hinge on the door further out, moving the door even further back. I'll have to take a clo...

Re: Valve Adjustment Question
That's true too. I didn't want to disassemble the head since the head was still on the car.

Re: 1.6 Head question
For this one, you may actually want to bring the whole assembled head to the machine shop for their analysis. The reason why I say this is you have not 100% identified what the problem really is. On head had zero compression on two cylinders and the other head has 100PSI on the same two cylinders?? ...

Re: Valve Adjustment Question
As the valvetrain wears, the valve clearance gets tighter. So, if you go to one direction, tighter will only result in needing service more often. The last head I put on ole 82 wasn't properly rebuilt by the manufacturer. It had already passed warranty period, so I was stuck paying for the fix mysel...

Re: Rabbit Door Interchange and Alignment Issues
Here's some pics. First pic below is ole 82, and the pic at the bottom is from the parts car. You can see the hinge in the parts car is much further back than ole 82 http://www.greenbaypartsworld.com/ole82hinge.jpg upper hinge for ole 82 http://www.greenbaypartsworld.com/redcarhinge.jpg upper hinge ...

Re: Need help pulling out! 1982 rabbit caddy speedo removal?
X2 on the speedo cable. I've found that I can pull my speedo cluster about 1" before the speedo cable limits it's movement. I think I reach in and blindly release the cable from the head.

Re: 1991 Jetta Heater Box...Tape Over Deflector Holes???
I've looked and do not find it in any home improvement stores. Similar products exist, but they don't have as thick of an aluminum backing on them and the layer of silicone (or whatever) sticky side is no where as thick. I called the HVAC technician that used some around the house on a project here ...

Re: 1991 Jetta Heater Box...Tape Over Deflector Holes???
I don't think the muffler tape and HVAC tape is the same thing. I'm thinking too large of a temperature difference to be the same product. I looked on the roll of HVAC tape that I have, and there's no manufacturer name on the inside of the roll. I don't think it had anything on it when I got it two ...

Re: 1991 Jetta Heater Box...Tape Over Deflector Holes???
There's a couple flapper doors inside the heater box. One directs air through or around the heater core (coolant flow goes through heater core all the time - air temp depends on flapper door position), and there is a deflector to direct air to the floor or up through the vents. I did my heater door ...

My guess is a wheel bearing and believe that it's the right (unloaded) side bearing.

Re: Rabbit Door Interchange and Alignment Issues
Ole 82 is 1983, and the two parts cars out back are 83/84. They have the bolt in windows. I thought about swapping the frames, but after spending half a day on my endeavor, I needed to move on to something else. Not sure how long the frame swap would take, and the rubber from the donor door isn't so...
