86 Jetta speedometer issues

I purchased a 1986 Jetta 1.6NA with about 185,000 on it. The speedometer did not work at first. I connected the cable at the back of the cluster and properly installed the gear into the transmission and got the speedometer working. It read too fast, about 10-15% too fast. The odometer seemed accurat...

Re: A call for help from Andrew (aka libbybapa)

New intermediate shaft seal appears to be holding, no more leakage.

I was careful to sparing apply the RTV - only a thin film on each part and then assembled them. I am confident I did not block that oil drainback hole in the seal carrier flange. Thanks for the heads-up though.

WTB: MK2 speedo CE1 (1985-1989?)

Need a good CE1 speedo. Either 120mph or 100mph. 1986 Jetta, CE1, cluster has two electrical connectors on back, one white and one black. When I first got the car, it read ~15% too high all of the time. Then it started to occasionally read accurately. Lately it changes +/- 15% as it wishes. Really. ...

Re: setting injector pump timing by ear

Has anyone put a timing light on (or dial indicated their pump of) their engine after setting it to the point just short of where it sounds like marbles? Just curious what number of degrees advance it was at. I do understand that it will vary some from engine to another due to tolerances.

How much blowby is too much?

While replacing the leaking intermediate shaft seal on the 1.6NA in my 185,000 mile 86 Jetta, I noticed how surprising easily the engine rotates. I am used to larger engines, both gas and diesel - but this little thing turns over really easy. Maybe that is where its 38mpg comes from... LOL I know se...

Re: A call for help from Andrew (aka libbybapa)

Thanks for the input. I will keep that in mind if I need to get into the intermediate shaft bushings. RIght now, the new seal appears to have fixed the leak, we'll see how long it holds. The old seal lip edge was worn, and it leaked pretty badly.

Re: A call for help from Andrew (aka libbybapa)

This thread has been very helpful, thank you. I am chasing an oil leak on the timing belt end of my 1.6 NA diesel engine - and I discovered the intermediate shaft seal was leaking. I removed the old seal and can see the seal was replaced at some point with a National 3476. My intermediate shaft bush...
