Re: 85 Diesel Jetta at Wide Open Throttle
I kinda wondered if it might be a mix - not quite enough oil to run away but enough to make the engine race. I don`t have any experience here.82vdub wrote:If the key kills it, it's not runaway.

Re: Cracked block options
Yep will do. Just had a vw friend check out the block and he thinks the chip on #1 at the bottom is below the reach of the piston .. so it really is promising. I`ll have it out and hot tanked very soon. I do have a rebuilt & very clean 11mm head, but also have a ton of extra valves and all the c...

Re: Cracked block options
New block .. junk! Just pulled the head .. #1 piston was halfway between its stroke (not in line with #4) and cocked a little sideways ... so dropped the pan and found half of the rod, most of the intermediate shaft, and endless carnage sitting in there. Also, the block has no cracks around any of t...

Re: Cracked block options
Alright so pulled several head bolts and measured across the threads at 10.86 mm - same as the others I have. Also did a compression test - was thinking maybe this thing would be good to go and I wouldnt pull the head ... got a read of 0 on #1 and 400-495 on 2,3,4. So i`ll be pulling the head and ch...

Re: Cracked block options
Yeah, best guess is that someone swapped in a "long block" somewhere along the way and it happened to be an early one.
I will get more info though, i`m also in shock about this.
Worst case, the 5 speed trans and rotary vane pump are worth the cost of the car and more.

Alright got it home, pulled the valve cover and found 11mm bolts again! wtf!
But got a 5 speed trans and a bunch of other crap I guess.

Re: Cracked block options
Turns out the parts car is a golf, I haven`t seen it yet but hopefully the engine interchange is still straight forward.

Re: The valve shim exchange thread!
Bringing this one back from the dead 5 years later... I have all sizes if anyone wants to do an exchange. I think i`m down to 4 shims on 2-3 sizes so i`ll look and update. I may also have a set coming back that goes alll the way down to 2.60mm for those of you who were looking to have some machined ...

Re: Cracked block options
Yeah best reply so far was a running 1.5 which could be just as bad as this one. There are a lot of these on the east coast. And i`m going to see a whole parts car Saturday. I wouldnt really buy that $300 block, doesnt seem worth it when a whole engine is that much at picknpull - selling off the acc...

Re: New Problem in Pittsburgh
Best thing to do is reseal everything. If you can`t remove the pump because of timing, reseal will be much more difficult but it is possible. The two covers on either side of the pump have o-rings, the shaft seal is a thicker rubber seal that doesn`t come in a reseal kit. The head/manifold and the t...

Re: Cracked block options
Don't do it.. It's to much trouble and a waste of time. It would suck to install a new head gasket and have it crack after two days of running. I bought a 11mm block from a guy that was trying to save the block. He had it welded by a shop. When he tightened he head bolts the weld cracked. he was si...

Re: Cracked block options
Yep i`ve been looking, called all the local yards so far. The best i`ve found on craigslist is a 1.5l in "running" condition for $100. I have craigslist searches set to notify me by email for 5-6 craigslist within a days drive. Eventually something will show up on there and i`ll snag it - ...
