Yeah, best guess is that someone swapped in a "long block" somewhere along the way and it happened to be an early one.

I will get more info though, i`m also in shock about this.

Worst case, the 5 speed trans and rotary vane pump are worth the cost of the car and more.

Turns out the parts car is a golf, I haven`t seen it yet but hopefully the engine interchange is still straight forward.

Best thing to do is reseal everything. If you can`t remove the pump because of timing, reseal will be much more difficult but it is possible.
