Check volume of diesel coming out of a single fuel line during cranking. It could be that your governor spindle sheath is sticking giving idle volumes only, when cranking, and not the required maximum. The spring involved is like that of a biro, and vulnerable to a sticky sheath.

Re: 81 Dasher Turn Signals
No need for a hoist, no need to remove engine. Span across engine bay with a 4" x 2" or 4" x4" piece of wood. Use suitable strips of wood to go in the wheel arch, [fender's?], nay bonnet's [hood's] rain drain to spread load, strap engine to this 'bridge' near where it meets the ...

Re: Mechanical Head
Hi, Something is wrong. You should be able to turn the sprocket by hand [just] in a series of jerky moves. Stiff enough to require use of a leather glove to prevent cuts! Spanner/wrench better. Vice grips between lobes also. Be sure to lube contact surfaces, lobes, shims and cam carriers. Spec; if ...

Interestingly; that mk1 Golf line was retained by the Quantum, and is better than the later 'two-parter'...

Strictly speaking the graph is referring to a DI engine. IDI with swirl likely to be different.

Re: MK1 Jetta won't start
Just to cross it off the list, get power to the glow plugs, and get glow plugs to take power. Poor fueling at cranking, air leaks, low compression, and the car'll never start. Weak cranking speed will make it hard. When started how does it run? Try switching off and immediate restart. The list is en...

If you can access the block, then to test that for 12mm, screw a wheel nut in. If it won't then it is 11mm

Re: Tips for a fail-proof head gasket - Any such thing???
It just happens that I came across a handful of Goetz asbestos headgaskets sealed in their thick plastic bags! I think the only possible drawback of the metal gaskets, is that they are less forgiving for old, lightly corroded heads. Whereas, the old gaskets with asbestos used to bond to the head an...

Get an original asbestos gasket.
In general: [My personal findings]
Periodically revisiting the head bolts is good policy, retorque those that undo with a torque of 60lbft or less. If bolt doesn't shift at say 70lbft, then leave alone. Retorque to 95lbft those that are 'loose'.

Re: Cold start mystery
Greg , does the car immediately perform as 'normal' [startingwise] if you change your mind and push the cold start back in? Or does the hard-to-start continue? If it persists, I suspect air getting in through the cold start. Any diesel coming from the pump or air bubbles appearing when cranking sto...

Re: timing belt shredding!
Get a straight edge say a ft long to put on the faces of the pulley's to check where the tracking error is, and which pulley is 'twisted'.
Do not overtighten belt tensioner. 3/8" fingertip movement of belt between the cam and pump pulley's sufficient.

Re: 1.6 diesel Dasher rebuild questions
Those oil pressures are nice and high. Funny thing about high pressures is that it can mean tight spec bearings. [And a good pump] Tight spec bearings give high pressures because they are low flow. Low flow could lead to reduced heat dissipation, and seizure, should wear develop in one bearing. Tig...
