Re: What is this ported cover plate for? (1.6 diesel)
The older style vacuum pump (diaphragm) had a hose plugged into it that goes on that barn on the plate. It being blocked off shouldn't cause any problems, as long as you're using the newer vane style vacuum pump.

Re: 1980 Diesel Pickup Stalling
My first inclination would be ignition switch. They get old, loose, etc. You could jumper wire the solenoid with an on/off switch. See if that takes care of it. Since the switch is responsible for energizing that circuit, that would also fit here.

Re: Coolant
Any time I've ever seen oil in the coolant was from a blown head gasket.

Re: Suggestions please
Should be the smaller size. I'm 99% sure. Quotes from the Scirocco Gear Up page: Here's a chart of transmission code and axle flanges (A2 transmissions) from the VW parts catalogue. There may be some aaplications missing, butI tried to cover most of them. I did not specify gas vs diesel, but I think...

Re: Suggestions please
You mean, 90mm and 100mm. I don't know of a diesel that had 100mm joints unless someone swapped the transmission. Get me the transmission code and I can tell you what size it needs. It should be on the bellhousing of the transmission, on the bottom.

Re: block heater
Ditto. Only problem I ever had starting my diesels was not enough battery juice to crank it over. Anytime I had my father come over and jump it, no matter how cold, it would fire right off immediately.

Re: Camshaft and TDC on flywheel WAY OFF
I personally would wait for the one to come back from the rebuilder. I'll bet, if that pump you have on it now came off a marine engine, that it is the culprit.

Re: Camshaft and TDC on flywheel WAY OFF
Industrial IPs have different governors... your most likely culprit. I believe Marine application is the same, its considered industrial. I'm going to hazard a guess and say you've found your problem.

Re: Turbo conversion because.....
My opinion is I think it would've been better if my engine wasn't pooched. I got it 1 owner with 93k miles, but it had a skip/miss in the upper RPM range and it wasn't injectors, because I put rebuilts in it. I think there may have been issues with the valves/lifters, but I never was able to figure ...

Re: Turbo conversion because.....
Well, I can tell you this. They seem like slugs but you drive em like you stole em, and they can keep up with the best of them. I would've much rather had a turbo, but I had no problems merging with interstate traffic going 70-80 before I got off the offramp. Hilly terrain and whatnot is a different...

Re: Turbo conversion because.....
Adding a turbo to an NA block is generally frowned upon for a few reasons. #1, no oil squirters to squirt cool oil on the pistons. #2 no sodium injected alloy in the head to help deal with the extra heat from the turbo. #3 turbo with an NA pump would only give a little boost in performance. The turb...

Re: 1980 Diesel Pickup eating batteries
The single red wire in the back of the alternator separate from the 3 wire plug is probably the RPM signal for the oil pressure sensor. Its been a while since I looked at one of those alternators but the signal wire for the alternator that energizes the field is usually a small gauge wire. My guess ...
