Re: Diagnosing Overheating
I don't recall ever getting such a hot reading on any of my engines at any point with a point and shoot tool? I guess proper hookup and type of gage might play tricks on you. I use auber gages on the cars I daily drive. I have the sender on the front port of the head that takes big hose to radiator ...

Re: I am about ready to give up on Jetta timing belt
time to get down and dirty and experiment with tracking and that front engine bracket :( to make it easier, each time you take the pump off put everything back to tdc so you can put the pump lock in. use clamps in the vital areas to keep the belt from jumping off the crank. then you can feed the pum...

Re: 81 Rabbit IP Problem
Interesting post on the led's. I redo my dashes by making plugs out of prewired single leds and hold them together with hot glue. I like the whole presentation at night. I experimented in the dark with all sorts of bright led's I got from ebay. From what I have read certain colors have issues with b...

Re: Noises at low RPM
Impossible to tell from here, but I can vouch for bad exhaust hangers make for violent banging/rattles. Had it happen on mk1 and mk2 chasis to the point of falling to the ground :) If it happens just right you can feel it throughout the car. I have to assume mounts that old are bad. I start with nam...

Re: 81 Rabbit IP Problem
It only gets into the teens where my cars reside and I haven't met an engine yet that didn't like the cold start lever pulled for start and warmup. Sure they will start and run, and are always noisy, but it sure seems smoother with it pulled. And if you have a pump with the idle advance, mine like t...

Re: Alternator straight to battery idea: Disaster or practic
I had a total meltdown on my 79 rabbit over the course of a week. I thought I noticed some funny intermittent stuff going on with the charging and kept driving. One night the lights were dimming and doing goofy stuff on the dash that I probably didn't pay much attention to before since I was daily d...

Re: Tuning Tips for Turbos?
I have never got 50mpg in any of my cars, even my gutted 79 rabbit. Maybe because I'm in california and have to keep up with traffic. Don't see how you expect to get more than the 50mpg they advertised back in the day with 55mph speed limits on the freeway? I have experimented with turning out the f...

Re: Leaky Heater Core....Temporary Fix???
There is no valve on the mk2 setup like the mk1 right? But the layout is the same with hoses and all of that and each of my cars does the job so I'm guessing it doesn't matter?

Re: Oil In Coolant or Coolant In Oil?????
You don't have an oil cooler do you? I had an incident with my jetta when the turbo was in one day where that blew. Perhaps it pushed oil into the coolant when running, because after I noticed this issue I drove 60 miles back home spirited :) If I had water in the oil I would assume the motor would ...

Re: Buy or Pass??
I'm in sacramento and got a truck from brothers friend and it sat in a garage for 10 years. No rust that I can see on shock towers or where the control arms are. Mine did have all the goop cracked off the drivers floorpan, although it didn't rust through. I think water came through the back window t...

Re: 1980 Rabbit Electrical Woes
A jumper from the fusebox sounds like trouble, most of the cars I come across are hacked up when somebody tries to get an accessory to work or to install a radio. If it was me I suggest you pull the dash and trace every darn circuit and make sure everything works. These cars rattle like hell, one lo...

Re: IP on crooked? Timing belt wearing on one side
I just had an incident with an engine I had out on the stand and put in my truck. Thought all was well until I came back from my first drive and mine was tracking off cam pulley. Had to fix it because I run covers :) So I tried to adjust the bracket, which has always worked for me on other cars, exc...

I never even thought of this, does the caddy have the same filter in the sender hole like rabbit/jetta?
If so how the heck do you get to it?
