Re: Which way should this part be pointing?
X2 on the dial gauge. Some machinists I work with gave me a little help on building an adapter for my dial gauge so I have used it a few times and never get to where it gives me proper performance. After a few rounds of that I just gave up and I start with the marks and then time by trial and error ...

Re: HELP! Re: Floorboard
I don't know of anywhere that sells these. I agree with Fatmobile, get some 22 to 26 gauge steel or some steel angle and fab up what you need to patch it in. Paint with [primer, POR16 and some krylon to topcoat it, undercoat all the underside of your new pans and keep driving.

Re: 1.6 diesel Dasher rebuild questions
That's not too unusual in my experience. There is some friction in that path that will allow some transmission spinning if there's no load. If you put your hand on the wheel and it stops easily I'd leave it alone. If you can't stop it with very little force you may need to tighten up a little on the...

Re: Converting a 1971 VW Camper to a Turbo Diesel
The lift is awesome and I got mine used for under $1K. Hammer drill, inserts, and hefty bolts got it all installed with lots of measuring. It picks up my F150 pretty well but we have limited it to small cars. It's only 7000lb capacity but never had any issues with it. Wish I could have it t my house...

Re: Converting a 1971 VW Camper to a Turbo Diesel
Thanks. Not sure what I'll do with the Rabbit, I no longer drive it in the rain and for sure not in any snow. If you see my thread on floor pans you will see what the crap they put on the roads did to my undercarriage and 9 weeks of rework was enough to make me keep it off the road except in nice we...

Re: Converting a 1971 VW Camper to a Turbo Diesel
So are you back in the Pittsburgh area now? A wild hair tells me to buy the TD motor from you but I don't get up that way much anymore. Then there's the fact that I'll probably never get around to doing anything with it. Maybe some day you'll get the urge again and do a TDI swap or M-TDI swap into a...

Re: What's Wrong With My Brakes?
well I have probably tried all of those in 45 years of working on cars including a mityvac, a homemade vacuum pump arrangement (sucked air around the bleeder threads too!), tubing into a jar of fluid, etc. The Motive thing has worked better than any of those as long as you have a decent adapter for ...

Re: What's Wrong With My Brakes?
true but pumping the master cylinder while you open the bleeder valves can be pretty challenging. I get no help. So I buy tools.

Re: What's Wrong With My Brakes?
The other thing I did with my brakes was a full flush of the brake fluid. I ended up buying the Motive Products tool. After the flush those brakes were nice and solid. All the air and nasty old fluid came out and got replaced with new. The tool with the VW adapter was under $60 and local service fac...

Re: What's Wrong With My Brakes?
I think he was referring to the small nub that is on the back (I think) if the adjusting wedge. If facing the wrong way it will not work properly. PONe thing I did that someone recommended (Quantum man I think) was to remove the rear tire and locate the wedge through one of the lug nut holes. Then p...

Re: 1.6 diesel Dasher rebuild questions
check for green corrosion down inside the cables if you can see anything where the insulation ends. I also try to hook up a good jumper cable from the negative cable directly to the block like at the lifting loop just to help out the ground side of the circuit. Try cranking for a few seconds then go...

Re: Floorboard
Yes my son did exactly the same thing on his G60-powered 87 Golf and it's solid as a rock. Not sure for how long but a million times less work than what I went through on my 82

Re: Floorboard
see my post on this in Projects from June through August. I did not realize what leaks I had in my 82 and like you discovered problems unexpectedly. That lead to much larger discoveries and replacement of both front floorpans and half of a rear. I still have a leak from my raintray I have not been a...

yeah I figured that's what that meant. Now if I can just find a use for those old 8-tracks.
