Re: Rough running when engine cold

I haven't tried it but I'd think you could see the timing advance with a dial indicator setup in the timing port. Setup just like you are timing and get you .095. Then pull the advance knob and rotate the engine and recheck timing. PumP might have to be turning for the timing to change.

Re: pre winter oil change

i'm guessing, but it would make sense of the desire for thicker oil in the VW diesel because they run a hotter thermostat than the gas. hotter engines need thicker oil to maintain the same lubricity because the oil thins as it gets hot and hotter engine parts might expand to greater tolerances depen...

Re: How to clean nozzles?

good points. hey, speaking of overtightening.... i've been torquing to 51ftlbs and then add another tweak of rotation, maybe a 1/16 of a turn or a hair more to keep things from leaking. i've never done the lapping.. only just adding a bit of extra torque to quell leaks. seems to work and the pattern...

Re: Rough running when engine cold

yeah, you've got clean nozzles, correct timing, compression, and we'll assume valve timing is okay. it would be a valid thing to swap the pump at this point. if the new pump runs fine, they know the old pump was bad. and it is bad anyway if the timing advance doesn't work. you've done more due dilig...

Re: How to clean nozzles?

hmmmm.... i always take the pintle out of the nozzle for cleaning. since it rotates completely freely, i assumed it was meant to rotate during use like a valve does. in fact, once i put the pintle back in place, i give it a twirl to see if it rotates freely, which they do when lubed with some WD40 p...

Re: Rough running when engine cold

also, try to put a dial indicator on the pump and see what the baseline advance is, if you have time this weekend. i'm thinking now it is pump retard more than injectors. but we're all just guessing!

Re: How to clean nozzles?

don't know what else to add that wasn't mentioned in that linked thread... other than to re-emphasize that i am not using a jewelry grade cleaner but a lab grade one. high ultrasonic wattage and heat. it'll perforate aluminum foil in a minute or so. watch out for the Harbor Freight units that advert...

Re: Rough running when engine cold

oh, you'll use your tester! you'll always have a fresh set of injectors to pop in! now go out and get an ultrasonic cleaner and you'll be a full service center! i cleaned up an old set of made in France nozzles that have a better pattern than new India ones. and the France nozzles had serious erosio...

Re: Rough running when engine cold

i can get hellacious nailing with snotted up injectors so if you are timing the pump to the nailing from bad injectors, you might be too far retarded. but here's my own counterpoint... on my recent pump swap, i had very poor running with lots of blue smoke and roughness. timed it roughly by the cast...

Injector shims, again?

anyone have a source for injector shims other than Mercedessource.com? all the injectors i have seem to have the 0.050" shim, except for the 2 150bar ones that have 0.054" i guess i don't need a whole set... just 0.051-0.055 range. had an injector on #2 that has been nailing bad and doesn'...

Re: Leaking distributor o-ring

i've done 2 now, both times using a long screw in the timing hole to keep pressure on the internals. i've also use the 'straw trick' where you take the screws out individually and put a section of drinking straw shaft in the screw hole so when the o-ring is slid on, the bolt threads don't nick it. i...

Re: Off topic - Garage Heaters?

i get headaches from the space heaters... i put an old fuel oil forced air furnace in my garage and i love it. 80-100,000 BTU output and no smell or carbon monoxide. don't need any ductwork, just let the fan push out the warm air. i don't keep my garage heated year round but in the winter, i can go ...

Re: Glow Plug Re-Wiring

and don't forget, when running individual wires, to use an open lug terminal at the glowplug. i used a solid copper ring and then cut a notch in the loop to allow the wire to be lifted off the GP without taking the nut all the way off... just loosen it and no more dropped nuts! since my GP wires swe...

Re: Glow Plug Re-Wiring

or as an alternative, leave the original relay in AND add a manual pushbutton. that's what i did and it allows the normal timer system to work when people borrow my car. if i want to give it extra glow time, i just hold the manual button in and the original relay is over ridden. running separate wir...

Re: Need some advice- coolant hose came off & 1.6 got really

first off, very cool for refunding the money so quickly and easily. it is what we all would want to happen to us and congratulations for doing the right thing. the rad fan coolant sensor is mounted in the lower drivers side of the rad and is totally independent of the gauge circuit. i think that yea...
