Re: A sad day indeed.....

i always compare the VW diesels and Vanagons to getting a spore in your body that grows and takes over reason. you put up with symptoms and idiosyncracies that you'd never tolerate in any other vehicle. after having 2 Westies, i swore i'd never own another VW because my Toyota has been 100% trouble ...

Re: Darn rebuilt injectors! 3 @ 135, 1 @ 140 bar. Ugh.

why do you need them so tightly matched? i know it helps with running but there is a point of diminishing returns. and to be honest, once they are bench tested/set, they will bed in at a different pressure after break in anyway. 5 bar is 65psi... i wouldn't sweat it that much because that injector w...

Re: got the Dasher back together but wont start

if you're in ND, it is cold enough outside now where it won't even puff if the glow plug circuit isn't working. plug it in and warm it up good, you'll have enough coolant and just listen for the continual hiss of the block heater. it should pop with a warm block. or just put a jumper cable from the ...

Re: Darn rebuilt injectors! 3 @ 135, 1 @ 140 bar. Ugh.

in the long term, see if you can find an injector tester... Buda, Kent-More, Bosch, etc. you are interested and testing and rebuilding your own seem like a logical next step! i say this because i stumbled on a Buda tester and really like being able to whip up a set of injectors on my own-- see the p...

Re: Re use oil filter?

as much as i've been tempted, i never reuse the oil. filter isn't such a big deal. but with the oil, crap falls in the pan, the pan itself is dirty, and metal shards can be in the used oil that have been flushed out of the pan.

keep your filter if you must but i would use new oil.

yeah, red loctite takes lots of heat to soften but it is removable... WHEN you use heat.

Re: Oil and water don't mix

the vacuum relief on the cap really doesn't allow much negative pressure in the cooling system so i wouldn't count on oil being 'sucked' into the coolant. it got there via pressure. start with a head gasket and studs. if that doesn't fix it, then there might be a block issue but don't worry yet. you...

Re: anti-seize on glow plus and injectors on my new head?

i've had good luck with the copper based antiseize in hot locations eg. exhaust studs, glow plugs, and injectors. i've ended up using it as my 'standard' antiseize because it seems to resist 'disappearing' better than the nickel based stuff. it's more expensive and worth it.

Re: paraffin and other potions..

i've been using 1/4 lb per 5 or 10 gallons with WVO... makes for a nice soft ignition at hwy speed. still raps at low speed. one injector is rapping on diesel when cold... loosened the injector nuts one at a time and found #2 to be the offender. i need to rebuild a spare and i think i'll set the pop...

Re: paraffin and other potions..

well, it might work as a soak but far far better is to give the nozzles a good run in a heated, ultrasonic cleaner. unless there is damage, it completely rejuvenates the nozzle removing all carbon deposits. i use a water-based degreaser like Purple Power at 45C for 1/2 an hour or so. spotless when t...

Re: Boiled Linseed Oil?

BLO is used to make 'tin cloth' or waterproof canvas. it plasticizes to a pretty durable finish but i have no idea of the 'self healing' properties of it. the waxy undercoating sprays remain soft enough to seal up over a slice or rock chip. at least in theory. everything rusts up here. everything. i...

Re: Compression Check & Intermediate Shaft Bearing R&R

i would totally do a new oil pump. you are suffering low OP and they are inexpensive. it is also good to update to the high volume pump if yours doesn't already have it. just as an aside, i got about a 1 bar (15psi) hot oil pressure boost on my 91 with hydraulic just by replacing the head with a new...

Re: Dumb Question: What is nailing?

i've found that strong nailing can greatly shorten the life of the glowplugs. running on veg oil, my injectors tend to de-pattern after about 3,000 miles and require a naptha/Diesel Purge treatment to quiet them down. which it does do. have to do this again this weekend but i'll be using naptha with...
