and re-reading your post, you said the PO 'adjusted timing'... i read that as 'adjusted timing belt' on my earlier post so you need to find out when the belt was replaced, if it has been. crucial thing to do as 82vdub said.

as a new diesel owner, take the timing belt very seriously as breakage will ruin your cylinder head. you said the PO 'adjusted' it.... red flag because you need to know it has been *replaced* within the previous 60K miles. if you don't know the mileage it was *replaced* at, it is time to replace it....

finding a tight valve is the best news you could have gotten!! go celebrate and whoop around a bit.

personally, i think your machinist was okay.... you'd still have SOME compression, quite a bit actually, with damage at the bottom of the cylinder. me thinks you more likely have simple valve adjustment problem on #4. go thru and check valve clearance and i think you might find a tight valve on 4. -...

oh yeah, it DOES have that bump/hole so it CAN'T be adjusted!! WTF, eh? must be a crossover parts issue where the plate without the bump is used on another application but the serated part can remain the same. i dunno.

the young guys at the shop were pretty conversational when they were replacing it... they said they wouldn't do one on their own if they were me for the sole reason of breakage when installing it. it must happen with some frequency.

yup. i used a Jabsco Centri-Puppy, similar to the PONY series, that was rated for some heat. but it had a conventional seal and it started leaking. i took the pump out, replaced the seal with a Viton one, and now pump 200F veg oil with it no problem.
