Re: Did I install the flywheel wrong?

I did install the flywheel wrong. I turned the engine to my painted TDC mark and pulled the transmission. I pulled the flywheel, it has one locating pin. When I placed the flywheel with the cast TDC mark up, there was a notch in the pressure plate that lined up with the pin. It's a bit tricky becaus...

Re: Did I install the flywheel wrong?

Thanks guys, I'll check the pulley nub. I turned the engine over as far as I could while watching where the flywheel passes through to bell housing hole: it does seem to have a wobble to it, making me think that I only fit one of the flywheel pins in the pressure plate and the other pin is riding so...

Did I install the flywheel wrong?

Okay, my problem: The clutch springs on my 1980 1.6 Mechanical lifter Caddy exploded. The truck does not have the original engine. So I turned the engine to put the flywheel in TDC indicated, dropped the 4 sp. trans and put in a 5 sp. I used a flywheel from the engine that had the 5 sp. because the ...

Re: 5 speed conversion

CoolAirVW: When you modified the trans mount did you have any problems with the difference in height between the 5 sp two side bolt and the 4 sp four top bolt? I'm doing a 4 to 5 conversion now and I don't have a 5 sp mount and it look like the attachment on the 4 sp is a lot lower (about 50mm?) tha...

Re: Parting out '80 & '81 Diesel PU's

Do you have a transmission mount bracket for a 5 speed? It connects the end of the trans to the mount on the inside of the drivers side fender, two horizontal holes for bolts.

Re: Box of rocks in 4 sp. tranny.

Here's some photos. Taking the clutch off tomorrow. Hopefully. The trans doesn't seem to be damaged except for some scratch marks inside, but I'm going to swap for a 5 sp. as soon as I can work out the trans mount problem. http://www.pbase.com/supersisu/image/164981653 http://www.pbase.com/supersisu...

Re: Box of rocks in 4 sp. tranny.

Have not checked clutch release plate, but I did find two shattered clutch driven plate springs that were bouncing around the bell housing.

Re: Box of rocks in 4 sp. tranny.

Thanks for the photos, Colby. It makes sense that something like that might have happened, clutch pedal pushing all the way down and nothing happening. I'll have to see what's inside when I pull the trans off.

Box of rocks in 4 sp. tranny.

Okay, this happened a couple days ago and I thought I would solicit some opinions before I take drastic measures. Driving my 1980 Caddy in stop and go traffic, clutch pedal went to the floor and I could not get it into 1st. I managed to get it into 2nd and when rolling terrible sounds of grinding an...

Re: Wintertime hard starting

Got my 1.6 truck started a few days ago by hitting the glow plugs with a propane torch. It took awhile to get the area warm and you have to be a bit careful not to melt anything and keep a smothering rag handy. I think my winter cold start problems are: 1) Heat from glow plugs immediately absorbed b...

FS: 1983 Jetta 1.6D with greasecar kit $1200 obo Porter IN

Realizing that I'm not going to be able to get this thing back together this summer: I bought this car a few years ago when it looked like I wasn't going to be able to get my Caddy on the road. Caddy is on the road, so this car has been sitting in my sister's backyard for too long. Brief description...

FS: 1983 Jetta N.A. Diesel, Porter Indiana

I bought this car a couple years ago because: I didn't think I was going to be able to get my Caddy on the road; It was not rusty; It had a GreaseCar kit. I have never used it, only driven it to storage spots. Right now it's sitting in my sister's backyard in Porter, Indiana. I'm in Chicago, it's a ...

WTB: 5spd Transmission end case

Looking for one of these, mine got torn up in a smash. Looking for something cheap, or trade (I've got a bunch of stuff sitting around).
