Re: What Is a Caddy??
I heard somewhere that since the Rabbit is called "Golf" in Europe, the variation that carries things was named "Caddy". Kinda corny, but possible.

Re: block heater
My plug block heater failed too, I can't figure it out: what can go wrong with a thick huge immersion heater? I've tried pulling the one out of my spare engine to swap and let me tell you: getting them in is a lot easier than pulling them out. It has a butterfly anchor that holds it in and I cannot ...

Re: 1980 Diesel Pickup Stalling
Okay, I might have solved the problem. Last weekend was warm enough to spend some quality time with my truck (pretty windy though), and while digging around I found a cracked clamp on the negative battery cable. The soft metal had stretched and broken from being overtightened. The clamp was still on...

Rust Rust Rust. Assuming you are a decent wrench, everything else can be fixed pretty easily thanks to this forum and cheap parts. ( I bought an engine rebuild from Jack for something like $1500.) After you own it for 5 years it will be a new car anyway.

Re: 1980 Rabbit Electrical Woes
Oh the fusebox! I've pinched the female plug ends (inside the plastic connector) with a very skinny jewelers flathead screwdriver to make the plug fit on the post a little tighter. The female end is rolled metal so you can collapse it a little. Then I stuck short lengths of copper wire strands aroun...

Re: 1980 Diesel Pickup Stalling
The two fuel lines at the bottom of the tank are fresh, I replaced the leaky cloth ones after about a year of driving around with a rag tied around them.
The tank does fart when I remove the cap, I thought that might happen because the tank was pretty empty. I'll try chrcking the vent line.

Re: 1980 Diesel Pickup Stalling
Bubbles! Nothing on startup except a midline input floater, but when the truck stalled while driving (twice) I jumped out and took a look. Both times there was a large bubble right next to the hose out of the fuel filter. It started up again soon and the bubble sort of detached and became a floater ...

1980 Diesel Pickup Stalling
My latest travail: My pickup engine has been instantly shutting off. It usually starts up again right away, but sometimes I have to let it rest for a minute. Not fun in city traffic. I don't think it is the injector solenoid, I've had trouble with that thing before and I've been all over that wiring...

Re: 1980 Diesel Pickup eating batteries
Hey Everybody, I think I've solved the problem: Do you know what kills batteries faster than anything? NOT PLUGGING IN THE ALTERNATOR!!!! Duh. Maybe it was the working in the cold and snow, maybe I didn't plug it in all the was and it fell out, who knows? All I know is that when I got the time durin...

Re: 1980 Diesel Pickup eating batteries
Just checked, battery light does not come on with ignition. Here's a question: There is a rubber plug with three wires (two red and one blue, I believe) that plugs into the back of the alternator. There is also a male spade connection on the back of the alternator that had nothing connected to it wh...

Re: 1980 Diesel Pickup eating batteries
The latest: Started truck this morning with fully charged battery (reading 12.5 v). Voltage across battery terminal while truck is running: 12.5 v. Revving engine didn't change voltage at all. I'm assuming that the alternator is contributing nothing and that the truck is running off the battery? Alt...

Re: 1980 Diesel Pickup eating batteries
Got battery #1 (the older one) charged up pretty well. Reading about 12.5 volts. I put in the truck this morning, horn worked. Glow plug light went off, BUT I didn't hear or feel the GP relay click off as usual. Truck started fine, alternator light off. I've pulled the GP relay and will let the truc...

Re: 1980 Diesel Pickup eating batteries
I've got about 12.5 v on both batteries. I put them on another charger today (I forgot the charger that read "full charge" has something wrong with it and doesn't really work, now it's in the garbage so I don't get confused again) and they both pulled about 5 amps (25 percent charge on the...

1980 Diesel Pickup eating batteries
So the alternator light came on a few days ago. I bought a new alternator, put it in, light goes off. Drive for a day, next morning dead (pretty new) battery. I figured that a dead voltage regulator on the bad alternator fried the battery, so I put in spare (very new) battery. Drive for a day, next ...

Re: 1980 Caddy Helper Springs?
Thanks for the advice everyone, I will probably get the 4crawler helper springs as well as parts to swap in a 5 speed trans. It's also very cool that someone makes a sway bar for the Caddy: http://neverenoughauto.com/p-6720-addco-rear-anti-sway-bar-355.aspx A funny thing happened after I hauled 8 20...
