If you have the pump completely apart, it's a 30 second job to pop the old front seal out. I prefer this way because there's no risk of scoring the shaft.

Glad you got it cranked! For future reference, another less common problem is a faulty ignition switch. The failure mode is power to the fuel solenoid in "run" but no power in the "start" position. It's something you wouldn't think to check if you didn't know it can happen. Drove...

Thanks to all

It took almost five months, but the Dasher lives again. Complete IP teardown & reseal, rebuilt the injectors, new belts & hoses, replaced water pump & intermediate shaft seal (not leaking - preventive maintenance), timing belt, glow plugs, fuel filter, oil & filter change, set the ti...

It's been a while since I did one of these. I'm reasonably certain that the flat side is up. The orientation in your pictures is, I beleve, correct. I will check my pump as soon as I have the opportunity - may be several days.

OK, the order of the parts from the bottom up is: 1. Spring 2. The plate with the two hooks on it. Bottom spring hooks to one of the hooks on the plate; top spring hooks to the other hook on the plate. 3. Other spring. The plate is now between the two springs. 4. The splined throttle lever. I hope y...

IraB's suggestion is a good one. Do that first. OK, let's analyze what is working and what could be amiss. First, if you haven't read the Bosch literature on how these pumps work, I recommend you do that. You can find it at http://etc.gnarlodious.com/Vanagon/Bosch_Pump/Bosch_VE_Pumps.pdf If you unde...

If you were planning to leave it on all night, you could well make do with much less than a 300 watt heater, since you want to keep it warm, not warm it up from - 20 in 60 minutes. When I have to start my airplane engine in cold weather (30 degrees) I just put a 60 watt light bulb under the cowling ...

Water pump o-rings

There are two o-ring gaskets associated with the water pump - one for the thermostat housing and one between the housing and the block. Are these the same part? Can't seem to find the housing-to block gasket, but the thermostat gasket seems to fit perfectly between the housing and block. TonyB Jacks...

If I understand correctly, you say you are using a ground from the ignition switch. There is normally no ground on the ignition switch- all the wires are 12V and which terminal has 12V depends on the position of the switch. If my understanding of your post is correct, you might try connecting your g...

I just finished a complete teardown and reseal on my IP. My pump was leaking and I figured while I had it out, I'd go ahead and replace all the o-rings and seals. I must say that at first glance, it looked more complicated (scary) than it turned out to be. The best part was the pump worked when I fi...

The light grey smoke when cold is pretty normal. Since the smoke disappears as the engine warms, I would guess that your timing is probably about right The 1.6na engines have a lever on the side of the pump next to the engine to advance the timing slightly when the engine is cold. It's called (as on...

The VW diesels are "interference" engines. If the belt breaks, the pistons will hit the valves. If you don't know the history, carefully inspect the timing belt for wear, broken teeth, evidence of oil or diesel fuel. If there's any doubt, replace it. Lots of info on that here. The gold sta...

The locating pin on the camplate should line up with the keyway on the pump driveshaft. If it doesn't, you're 180 degrees off.
