OK, let's think about this a little. When the injection pressure rises to the point where the injector "pops off" the fuel is injected into the cylinder. So for the dynamic timing of the pump to advance, the injection pressure would have to reach that point sooner in the cycle, therefore p...

IP leak diagnosis/question

I have a couple of symptoms with my 1.6na Dasher that I'd like to run by you gentlemen. I'm getting air in my pump. The engine stalls within a minute or two at idle. With the enigne running, there are no bubbles in the clear line to the pump but my clear return line from the injectors to the "O...

It turns out that I did not have full travel on the throttle. The throttle lacked almost 3/8" of hitting the full throttle stop. Cable adjustment solved that one. Thanks to all for the help. The bad news is that it looks as if I have a rather nasty leak from the IP main shaft seal. The timing b...

It could be that the fuel stop solenoid on the injection pump has failed or has no voltage. If you remove the wire from the solenoid and then touch it to the solenoid with the ignition switch on, you should hear it click.

Thanks

Many thanks for the advice & suggestions. I will make the checks noted. The way it's working now isn't causing a problem - just different from what I'm used to.

Driving a diesel - throttle response & IP reseal

Took my new (to me) Dasher 1.6na out for it's first spin yesterday. I noticed that when I accelerate, the response is very mediocre unless I put my foot almost to the floor. The car never hesitates or stumbles, but compared to my long gone 78 Rabbit gasser, acceleration is very slow unless I almost ...

Re: Racor

Thanks, Frank, for the advice.
If you don't have issues with the clear line having bubbles, you can keep it. As a matter of fact, I am seeing bubbles in the clear line to the IP. I didn't think about air leakage into the Racor. I have a new spin-on filter coming & when I change it out, I...

Racor filter/separator question

My recently aquired 81 Dasher 1.6na is coming along nicely. I've gotten it running reliably now, replaced a leaking oil pressure switch, and gotten all the electrical equipment working, thanks to the guidance of you folks. The engine appears to be in amazing shape - compression is 490 in all 4 cylin...

Fixed!

You folks hit the nail on the head! My ignition switch appears to be defective. Fuel solenoid has voltage in the on position, but none in the start position. Many, many thanks for the help on this one.

Unusual hard start problem

Engine is a 1.6na with fuel at the injectors, new glowplugs (working), rebuilt injectors, good battery and good cranking speed. I crank the engine for 15 seconds at a time and it will start maybe one out of 3 or 4 times, Every time it starts it is just as the key is released from the start position....

Phototach

There are some very good digital optical tachs available to measure diesel RPM. Amazon sells one for less than $25. They work great!

Should I replace timing belt?

I'm rehabing my 81 dasher, recently aquired. The timing belt appears to be in good shape, but I'm aware you can't judge condition by just looking. The printing on the back of the belt is still partially visible which leads me to believe that it may be fairly new. Is that a valid conclusion? I plan t...

Does it turn over slowly?
Cranking speed is excellent ! I finished removing the injectors & glowplugs today. (yes, I put aluminium foil over the pump outlets). Plan to run individual wires to the glowplugs as suggested elsewhere on the forum.
