I just can't quite follow whats been done to that engine, I thought the 1.9 had a bigger bore than the 1.6. I put the insides of a 1.5 into a 1.6 once. There was a pin height difference as I recall.

Try the TDI forum for 1.9 info as there are a limited number here with the 1.9, I believe.Phil

Kevin g,
My son has the same car, a '97 1.9TD and gets 50 miles per Imperial gallon(4.54 liters). That's at 80kph(50mph), in the summer, running WVO. The Jetta is a heavy car. The 1.9 is a strong engine and set up to suck up the fuel if needed. Phil

I didn't realize that mechanical cams were more efficient. Is that due to a valve timing issue or is it an oil demand issue? Phil

I've had a few VW heads machined with no problems. The last one, a 1.9 that just had the valves done, came back with a big dent in in at the worst possible spot, between 2 cylinders. Then the machine shop charged me for the machining. Part of the mark was still there, so I took it to another machine...

My early 1.6 used to start surprisingly well with one glow plug out, but as winter approached it made a big difference. Engine condition is the variable here I think. Two glow plugs out, oh man, not good. I have an ammeter wired to monitor so I look at it every time I glow. It will usually show one ...

The "Diesel Fundamentals" book that crutch mentioned is available at our local library, it has to be ordered. I will let you know when it comes. I follow with interest stories about Greenland. There is documentary probably still available from Nova on the 'Kiwi bird'. A sad story about a B...

I like the pictures. I miss my Caddy, victim of salt poisoning, it was really good in snow. My son put the 1.6 in a Sidekick, best thing we ever did. Our engine block had rust in the holes Acme uses for their engine mounts, so we had to drill most of them out for 7/16" NF studs as I recall. Onl...

I think you'll have a hard time finding a % difference in compression readings from cold to hot, described in a manual or on the internet. Most interesting to hear from someone who had actually done this, to see the result. What I think you were referring to in your last post was cranking speed, and...

1.9 turbo questions

Some nagging questions about the oily KKK turbo I have on a 1.9TD. Are rebuild kits available and what is the success rate when doing this. Phil

Unless you can get a transaxle attached to it with a starter motor, I don't know how you're going to get a compression test. Cold compression readings, I don't believe, are that much less than hot readings. Turning the engine over by wrench a couple of turns would be a good idea to make sure it's no...

"is it possible to over tighten the T-belt?" Not with this design, if preloaded properly, although it may not be the only reason VW started using it. When the crank sprocket slipped on our 1.9(before we bought it) it damaged the 'stop' bracket on the back of the tensioner, as I recall. Har...

I had a heat shield stuck once and used an oxy/acet torch to heat it. Had to get it red hot. If you put a small magnet in there it would 'stick' to the remains of that heat shield, proving it's there. There may be hope yet for the sealing surface on the head. Libbybapa is right, there is no substitu...

Golf/Jetta, if I've read your thread right.... My son drives a 97 Jetta 1.9 TD. When repairing the damage from a loose sprocket we replaced the spring loaded belt tensioner. It didn't look quite right so we didn't take a chance and I do believe we tried a 1.6 tensioner to no avail. I remember asking...

Where to find injection pump test specs

Anyone out there know where to find the specs used to test the various makes and models of older injection pumps. Coveted and guarded by the fuel injection repair shops, some of this info may have leaked out on the internet, perhaps a service manual has been smuggled out? Link anyone? Phil
