Re: 1980 1.6na Caddy won't start. I think I know why...
Got it started again this morning using a propane torch. Ran fine, after it warmed up I noticed small bubbles emerging from the joint between the cylinder head and gasket under the #3 glowplug. This is above where there are puddles of coolant collecting on the engine block below. I didn't see any fl...

Re: Power brake booster
I took the brake booster off once because the clutch cable bracket on top of the pedal box broke, not for any brake repair. There is a bracket that hold the booster to the firewall, I think I was able to get the booster off the bracket then take the bracket off the firewall (you won't have to do thi...

Re: 1980 1.6na Caddy won't start. I think I know why...
Got it started: Replaced glow plugs with used set (worked when parked.....), new ones seemed to get warm but not really hot. Replaced fuel filter, filled with ATF. Cranked it over, got a burp. Recharged battery, then: Used a propane torch to heat up the glowplugs, hit three pretty well. Some smoke f...

Okay, I've got voltage at the glow plugs when ignition is turned on, turns off with relay. That means if plugs are good, they should get warm? ( don't have an ammeter, hesitate to put my multimeter in the circuit to test, tiny little wires). Also, it's cranking really really slow, battery checked ou...

Regarding engine smell, I don't smell coolant but I sure do smell diesel!

Re: 1980 1.6na Caddy won't start. I think I know why...
I guess my main question is: Does a blown head gasket prevent an engine from running? I've never had a head gasket fail on an automobile, I don't really know the symptoms/effects. I imagine the engine would lose compression? I turned the crankshaft with a wrench, it feels just like my rebuilt one: t...

So, a bit of a mystery that I hope I can get some opinions regarding. I have a suspicion, but don't want to spoil the speculative fun. Things have been happening with my 1.6na Caddy for awhile, I've been deferring some maintenance due to cold weather for awhile so I'm fully aware that I probably des...

Re: 1980 Caddy electrical - what else?
All fixed! A few minutes with sandpaper on the battery terminals fixed it right up. Must have oxidized a bit when it was removed. Thanks all.

1980 Caddy electrical - what else?
Okay, a new one: Took the battery out of my Caddy for a few days to use in another car in another location. When I put in back in and turned the key, lots of buzzing from the glow plug relay and no turning over. I made sure the battery was charged and took a look at the relay, seems okay. A few days...

Re: WTB - 1980ish Rabbit right front subframe
It took awhile, but they were able to pull out my frame after 8 hours on the frame machine. Seems to go pretty straight down the road, it's too cold and wet to crawl around underneath to inspect. thanks for the offer, fatmobile.

Re: WTB - 1980ish Rabbit right front subframe
Great. But please hold on for a bit, I might not need it: This is the first accident I have had with collision insurance, it seems that my insurance company wants to total loss but their collision shop is going to try to pull it straight with their frame rig. By chance, I think my insurance sent me ...

WTB - 1980ish Rabbit right front subframe
Stuffed my pickup in a pothole last week, it is a the the insurance shop right now getting appraised. I'm pretty sure they won't want to repair it (it's a fancy car shop) or be able to find parts so: I hit pretty hard right below the bolt that hold the passenger front control arm. Pushed the wheel b...

1980 1.6D Alternator Bolt
The top bolt fell out of my alternator bracket (the bolt the alternator hangs on, not the bolts that loosen/tighten to adjust tension). Lost on the road somewhere; and I haven't been able to find another (seems to be the one spare part I don't have). I used a long 8mm bolt with lock nut, filing down...

Trailer Towing with 1980 Diesel Pickup
Okay, truck is running well and it's time to think about other things: Does anybody know what the trailer rating is for a Caddy? Or has anyone had experience? I've towed a little Harbour Fright 4x8 trailer with about 500 lbs no problem, but I would like to pull a little camper. The owners manual for...
