Re: 1.6 diesel Dasher rebuild questions

Clutch cable is adjustable down by the lever on the side of the gearbox. Take up the slack by pulling on the lever with your hand. Adjust the locking nuts. Never had to remove a bush for the starter in 20+ years of Quantum driving.

Re: What's Wrong With My Brakes?

Great that you fixed it. The lozenge can develop a notch in it, especially if the hub and the shoes are of good quality, and wear slowly.

Re: Test engine compression

Hi, I should think a plate would work. Not sure of the pressures, but perhaps 20 down to 5psi would give you enough time for a measurement. Variation between cylinders MAY be a sign of wear, but differences between BDC and the top 1/2 inch where bore wear occurs would show up in the case of wear, n...

Re: Test engine compression

You could always do a timed leakdown, for each cylinder at both TDC and BDC. Compare it with your running engine, to create a loose relationship with compression PSI and ring leakage. Work a little oil onto the cylinders if your 'new' engine has been stood a while, to closer match your current runn...

Re: 1.6 diesel Dasher rebuild questions

See my recent thread. Your problem lies with the lift pump vanes sticking. Strip down and get the pump's vanes to stick to the walls with surface tension. 3hrs work total

Re: Newbie here, IP problem

If you can see enough of the return line that the braided line attaches to near the bulkhead, and if is transparent, then that is sufficient; (if it is like the Quantum...)

Re: And now for something completely different...

Wow, a neat test at the right time during a pump rebuild/reseal. Thats good to know when your in there, even better after its all put together! The vanes are such a precise fit, I dread taking them out and putting them back in. I hear they're supposed to stay in their exact positions. I know there ...

Re: And now for something completely different...

OK time's up! But first I'd like to raise a glass of cider to the 30th birthday of my engine, born on 7/11/1984. All thanks to, [or despite] the Plastic Bottle Hone job. Back in May, the engine developed the 'no restart when hot, until stone cold' disease: Up to 3 hours before a restart at it's wor...

'82... Yeah, far out man

This is actually a good sound.
If you get this after [strictly speaking during  ] a rebuild; then it's a thumbs up!

And now for something completely different...

During some recent work on repairing my car, I produced this soundtrack. Strange as it sounds, it is something we should all aspire to and is a good sound. Before I reveal what it is, and it becomes part of a sticky, anyone care to play my game and guess what it is? Hopefully the sound is...

Re: Newbie here, IP problem

Great... I use a 50cc syringe to suck fuel through pump and remove air. I disconnect @ end of return hose by firewall and is a cheap substitute for a Mityvac, and far more powerful than a squeezebulb ended syringe. Only downside is the plunger swells if immersed in diesel. Coating in moly grease re...

Re: Newbie here, IP problem

Hi,
That's about correct. I use the middle one on the left, however I'm sure you are within adjustable range. On the accelerator cable side I leave just a hint of slack.

Re: Newbie here, IP problem

With lid on, turn spindle as far anti clockwise as possible with fingers. Let it settle back on it's own. Back off slow idle stop. Drop on accelerator lever whilst tensioning the spring with a screwdriver. Aim to get the single mark in line with the second most clockwise 'long mark' Screw nut on wi...
