Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

Thanks for the response, fatmobile. I did find one splitbin the outlet fuel line at the pump that was prob drawing air in. I don't currently have clear lines. As for the splines, I have tried every position on them with no luck. I'll test drive tomorrow and see if that leaky fuel line helped.

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

Yes, that's what I am concerned about, fatmobile. I'm not sure that I put the accelerator arm back onto the splines on the governor shaft exactly how it was before replacing the top seal. So the question is, how do I get it back to how it should be? There's three marks on the accelaretor arm and I h...

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

If you mean the splines on the accelerator cable, this one doesn't have them. It's the older style off an '83 Vanagon. no clear fuel lines. everything was good untill i replaced that top seal. makes me think i didn't get the lever back on correctly.

Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

Long story short, pump developed a leak in the main top seal. I replaced it but ever since taking the top lid off I have not been able to get the engine to run right. Symptoms are, low power, excess dark black smoke, very stinky diesely smell, and no matter how many times I tweek the different screw...

Re: Pump not pumping?

So, I got the head back with new valves again. So far the compression in each cylinder is between 100 and 200psi. Is this typical for new rings? Do the rings need time to "seat" before 300 psi or more can be achieved?

Re: Black smoke under load

So, I checked the delivery valves. They seem to be working fine. I still can't get any real power outta this thing. Could the pump be wearing out? I don't want to swap pumps because I'd have to swap out the accelerator arm as well as other parts on the pump. I'm pretty much out of ideas except takin...

Re: Black smoke under load

Thanks Tyler Durden,
I will check the delivery valves next. If they work, then I'm swapping the pump. If that doesn't work, then I'll scrap the whole car. Lol. I will report back!
Thanks again!

Re: Black smoke under load

Thanks for the reply bscutt. I'm trying not to dump more money into this thing, so if I can avoid paying for injector testing that would be nice. So far it looks like each injector is spraying fuel. My next guess is to make sure the delivery valves are working. If so, and I still have no power and b...

Re: Black smoke under load

So, I took the injectors out and connected them to a working pump with the lines upside down. They each spray fuel out of them onto a paper towel. So, they seem to be working fine. Should I have a diesel shop test them for pop pressure?

Re: Black smoke under load

I have not had any luck with the dial indicator. I'm trying to adjust it by sound. I have attempted to adjust all screws on the pump, over and over and over again. I'm hoping that maybe one of the injectors is bad.

Re: Black smoke under load

Thanks Greg Lousy. I'll have to check the injectors I guess. That's where they have to be pressure tested at a shop, right?

Re: Black smoke under load

So I just advanced the pump one tooth. Here's the results. It pretty much illiminated the black smoke. That's good. Unfortunately it still has a lack of power and there is also a much louder knock in the engine. Maybe turning the pump more towards the engine?
