SO I think I got my vanagon timed. But I don't think there's any fuel in the filter or pump. I read the post to suck the fuel from the return barb. Would I attach a hose on the tank side of the return fitting? Then I would be pulling fuel through the filter, pump and injectors right? Is this the bes...

Fatmobile...are you serious? Don't you just put a socket and ratchet on the crankshaft bolt and turn it with the car in neutral? bc ps...thanks again for all the advice everyone. I think I got it timed now. After suckin' some fuel in to prime the pump (that IS how the home mechanic can do it right?)...

which said to zero the gauge to .039in. But then it said to set the large sweep needle to zero. There was my confusion.

So I am finally to the point of timing the injection pump. Any advice out there on a simple way to do this? I have my timing gauge but it reads in inches and most readings that I've seen are in mm. Has anyone used a gauge like this? I've read the pump timing procedures on this site, my Bentley, and ...

Those are good tips. I'll try them all. Fatmobile, how are you able to swing a hammer in there for the crank bolts? It's so tight, do you take the muffler off for more room?

How do you suggest I loosen the cam sprocket without the cam lock in place. And how should I loosen the pulley bolts on the crank sprocket so I can remove the drive belt?

So as of now the cam sprocket is loosey goosey, tensioner is off and belt is hanging from the crank sprocket. I set the engine to TDC, but I think it has moved. that sucks. we had similar weather up here in Bellingham. Heavy wet snow followed by lots of flooding and carnage.

So I got the bolts off the water pump pulley. The vice grip technique definately worked well for me. Now, any advice out there on removing my drive belt? I've got it ready to pull off except for this wierd little metal plate that's bolted into the block. I'd have to remove the crank pulley to get to...

I need to clarify though, do you mean clamp the old belt to the alternator belt or clamp it to the pulley itself? Thanks again,

Does anyone have advice on how to remove the 3 little bolts on the water pump pulley for an '83 diesel vanagon? I can't find a way to bind up the pulley to loosen those bolts and replace the belt.
