Re: Black smoke under load

Ok, so I'll try moving the pump back a tooth even though the pin won't line up. The vanagon's are heavy and slow with these engines, but it def. used to have enough power to at least get up to 55. Now only on a downhill can I get to 55. Hopefully this will help, and I'll post back up the results. I ...

Re: Black smoke under load

So I gotta bring this back up. I still get black smoke under heavy load. I've tried everything I can think of from timing to adjusting the screws on the pump. I don't understand how the belt can be off a tooth. I have the block at tdc as well as the cam. Now if I move the pump sprocket one tooth, it...

Re: Pump not pumping?

I just got the head back from the machine shop. I'll get it back on the block and check the compression first thing.

Re: Pump not pumping?

12mm bolts. Alsonjust learned that the valves are not seating properly which is most likely the cause. My machinist is working on the head now.

Re: Pump not pumping?

So, an interesting turn of events. Checked all the valve shims, and they all check out to be fine. I then noticed dried coolant around the edge of the head gasket. Pretty safe to say it was leaking. So I pulled the head off again for like the millionth time. It was a 2 notch. I'm not very good at me...

Re: Pump not pumping?

So I gave this thing a compression test and came up with the following.
From right to left:
340 psi
120 psi
120 psi
80 psi
Why would I be getting such low compression? It has new rings and a rebuilt head by a reputable head mechanic. 2 notch head gasket. Maybe valve shims are off?

Re: Pump not pumping?

So here's the latest. I have fuel to the injectors and am getting exhaust fumes. I pulled the injectors again and the glow plugs glow nice and bright. The interesting thing is, I'm getting combustion in two cylinders. I can see this because there is a good amount of carbon build up in two of them an...

Re: Pump not pumping?

I moved the pump sprocket by one tooth, but then the sprocket lock pin would not fit and it still did not start. I was able to set the timing closer to .40 though. But I'm not sure I'm using the gauge correctly? What exactly does the "preload" of the gauge mean? Do I insert the gauge and t...

Re: Pump not pumping?

It's not bucking the starter, I don't think. There's no difference with the solenoid powered on or off. The pump is turned as close to the head as it will go and if my timing readings are accurate, then it's set at .034". I don't have a metric dial gauge.

Re: Pump not pumping?

They bench test the pumps there and had to replace the shaft that is above the main drive shaft. So now it pumps fuel to the injectors. Glow plugs for sure. It tries to fire but just doesn't.

Re: Pump not pumping?

So now to this problem! Haha. I took the pump to my local diesel place and they fixed the pump so that it pumps fuel now. Now I'm just trying to get the timing right. There's tons of exhaust and it's trying to kick, but it just won't fire to get it running. Keep messing with the pump timing now?

Re: Black smoke under load

I replaced the air filter and that helped. But what really made the difference was simply backing off the fuel screw. Only problem now is it seems there is a little less power. It's hard to get up any easy hills in 5th going 55 like it used to. Would adjusting the pump timing help this?

Re: Black smoke under load

Tyler Durden, how do I fix the problem? If I back that one screw out (not the idle screw but the other one), then the idle goes way down. Should I do that and turn the idle screw up?

Re: Black smoke under load

And that should give me more room to turn the pump accurately right, Josh?
