Re: Pump not pumping?

Yes the spray can be dangerous Tyler durden. I will try that too. I get fuel at the injectors when spinning it with a drill, just not with the starter. I know the glow plugs glow red. But i'll try the messy test. Lol.
82vdub. I checked the wires and they don't get hot.

Re: Pump not pumping?

That's good advice 82vdub. I'll check the wiring. I thought maybe new rings and a rebuilt head, there might be some resistance.

Re: Pump not pumping?

So, I gotta revive this post. I'm still monkyin with this '85 jetta. It has a 1.6 na diesel. At this point, to keep it simple, it seems like the engine does not crank fast enough to pump fuel. I can spin the pump with a drill and it pumps fuel to the injectors, but not when using the starter. It cra...

Re: got the Dasher back together but wont start

I think an 1/8th to a 1/4 is too much. As close to the center of the timing hole as possible.

Re: 1.6 Head question

This particular engine prior to me owning it had maybe a timing belt break or something where pistons contacted valves pretty good. Left a good stamp on two pistons. I replaced the worst piston. I just enjoy learning about working on these engines, so it's not that big of deal to me to tear stuff ap...

Re: 1.6 Head question

I see, fatmobile.
I never had the block checked for warpage or anything like that. I simply replaced the rings and checked the bearings on the crank and rods. Replaced seals etc. So hopefully the block is OK.

Re: 1.6 Head question

Thanks for the tips fatmobile. I might just try that. Is the valve clearance the gap of when the valve is all the way open?

Re: 1.6 Head question

It turns fairly easy, with some resistance. But prob not enough. It def only has 100psi in 2 cylinders. I have a good machine shop I've used before, just trying to save money. Isn't there a backwoods way to rebuild these heads without having to take it to a machine shop? Thanks for all the advice. I...

Re: 1.6 Head question

Turning the engine by hand is no problem. It just won't fire. Just crank over and over till the battery dies. I was hoping it would try to run even with a couple low compression cylinders. Would you recommend a full head rebuild and machining? Prairieview? None of the things you mentioned have been ...

Re: 1.6 Head question

So, I gave up on the head in question and swapped over another used one. Now I'm getting around 100 psi in two cylinders and 300 psi in the other two. So, my question is, shouldn't it still run even with low compression in two cylinders? Remember my other head had zero psi in the same two cylinders....

Re: 1.6 Head question

I've heard the valve guides are kind of a nightmare. How do I tell if they are closing all the way? When the cam loves are up, the valves look like they're in there nice and tight.

Re: 1.6 Head question

Yes, a bad dream Greg Lousy. lol. This is a fresh rebuild of the lower end. So I'm just trying to get it started. I'm going to pull the head and look closer at the valves. I don't think it's the tester because the other two cylinders registered over 300 psi.

1.6 Head question

So I have 300 plus lbs. compression on two of the four cylinders. The other two have 0 lbs. registering on the gauge. As if the cylinder is not building pressure at all. The block is freshly rebuilt with new rings. The head is questionable from an unknown source. Does this sound like the head is toa...
